Our babies are 4-1/2 months old and the doctor says they are ready to start cereal but they hate it! They won't eat it at all. They will take juice, but they refuse to eat the cereal. Any tips to get them to eat it? They are both over 16 pounds now and they need more than just formula to satisfy them. They are eating 6 oz every 3 or 3-1/2 hours. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

It might be that they are not ready for solids. 4 1/2 months is a little early. Just because the doc says they can have it starting at 4 months, doesn't mean they are ready for it. You could put it aside and try again in a couple of weeks.

But if you really think they are ready - then there's no reason they have to have cereal - especially if you're already giving them an iron fortified formula - the cereal is just for practice and to take up space in their tummy. You could go straight to some other first veggies or fruits - try sweet potatoes or carrots. Or some babies hate the rice, but do fine with oatmeal, you could try that.

I agree with the PP. Even though we got the go ahead for cereal at 4 months it was more like 4.5 before we started and even then they were hit or miss with it. I would wait another week or so and try again.

Make the cereal with some juice instead of water or formula. Also, mix in mashed bananas with it. My kids would never eat it plain. Also, the pp was right, they can go to other fruits and veggies. Cereal was never big here. I tried all my kids at 4.5 months (with the twins it was 6 months, they were 2 months early) and they were never really ready. They hated the thought of eating. I don't think they really took to it until they were close to 6 months. I would try a little a day and not make it a big deal. Eventually they started to enjoy the idea more.

My kids did not like plain cereal. We moved quickly to fruits and veggies, sometimes with a little cereal mixed in.

Ditto. I was planning on skipping cereal all together since there is no nutritional value. I'd rather just give more formula. You might just want to wait and then go to fruits/veggies.

Our pedi instructed us to only give them rice cereal until they were 6 months old. We make it with formula, but he told us we could add a bit of apple juice to it to give it some more flavor. They did much better after we added the apple juice. It took almost two weeks of trying once a day before they got the hang of it. Now they eat like champs and seem to enjoy it.

We didn't get the go ahead from our pedi until 6 months, but they were preemies. Rice cereal was not a big hit, even though Jake had it in his bottle for a month before we tried the spoon. Oatmeal has been much better. When we started solids it took about 2 weeks for Ryan to "get it". Jake caught on much quicker. Be consistent and try just once a day. More formula isn't going to hurt them. I've read on here of babies drinking 8 oz bottles 4x a day.

I agree with the other PP, just because the doc says their ready doesn't mean they have to have it. We plan to formula feed till they are a year old. May test the waters with cereal, but don't plan to add it to their daily food.

    A. Maybe they're not ready at all

    B. Maybe they just hate cereal. My babies never had cereal, went straight to stage 2 veggies and fruit. Same with my oldest. I did mix a table spoon in that occassionally to make it less runny, but with the formula ... yuk!?
