For awhile I've been waiting to hear our girls first words. They've been babling some random things but nothing I could understand or would have called a word. Other than the regular "mama" and "dada". Then a few days ago Azalea started saying "Buh! Buh!" and came to me with a book. I said "Book?" And she said "Buh!" all excitedly, Then she just kept saying "Buh buh buh" about 50 times as she was holding her book, so I was certain that was definately a word. Then I realized a lot of other things she was saying for awhile were words too (I thought they might have been but wasn't sure until the "Book" incident).

So far this is what I think she is saying...
    Book aka "Buh"
Blue aka "Bwuh" (I think this actually may have been her first word)
Baby aka "Bah bah" (a couple of times she actually said baby)
    Thanks/thank you aka "Daaa"

I'm pretty sure this is what she is saying because she generally motions something along with the words, or repeats them in that manner after we say the word to her.

So now I am wondering, what were your kids first words? How did they actually say them? Did you know or understand what they were saying? I'm totally curious now about everyone else's kids! So indulge me please! :D

My kids are younger than yours but I've been wondering the same thing. When is it considered a word; when they say it appropriately or when they consistently refer to a specific thing when they say it?
Ellie responds whenever we say bye bye - she'll wave and specifically say the same 2 syllable sounds that sound like bye bye but are really closer to gaa gaa. when we say clap she'll clap and say a word with a "c" sound in it. I don't consider any of these things words though.

Mine were mama and dada and probably the first word after that was "cat" and then meowing like our cats do. Kids are too cool!

Momma, Dadda, and Bella (our sitter's dog) were my girls first words (in that order!).

mama was the first word, then ba for ball, and br for bird, and now they also say bo for book and several others. So, the only thing that they say that actually sounds specifically like the word is bubble, other then that its just a version of the word

My boys said "mamamamama" and used that appropriately but their first non-parent words were ball and duck.

All my kids said duck or rather "duh" pretty early. DS1 said "apple" as his 2nd word. DS 2 and DS 3 say lots of B words that all kinda sound alike for: ball, bubbles, book and blocks - sounds like "bah". They also say "bar" for a fruitbar and "go" for goldfish. Mamamama and "mo" for milk and more.

Animal sounds were very early words here as well - woof, meow, neigh, baa, etc. DS2 now says "wow" whenever I turn the page of a good book - it's very cute! :)

My oldest daughter could say a long list of animal sounds before she ever started saying "words." One of her favorite first words, though, was "stuck." She applied it to every problem she encountered, appropriate or not. It was very cute... I also discovered that I say "Oh no" and "Oh dear" a lot because those two phrases were parroted back to me early on.

Alice's first word was meow. Then duck. Then book, ball, stuck, whatzat, daddy, hi. . .

I come home from work and I hear from both of them "hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii dahdeeeeee"

The best though is when they're sitting in the SBS stroller and they both start growling like dinosaurs.

DS said "on" and DD said "shoes." These were both before Mama or Dad. Go figure.

DD1 said mama, DD2 said Dada, DS1 said Annie (DD1's name), A&E said dada first.

Now the little one hays hiiiii and waves, but I don't think he really knows what he's doing.

They first word other than mama dadda was "up". At first it sounded like ub but Colin can say it clearly now. Then recently it's been "more" which sounds like maw. Colin has said duck a few times and Mitchell says "whats that" while pointing, which sounds like s-at.

My boys say da-da, yay-yuh (Laila, our dog), dah (dog), Tuh (eat), ba (ball), no-no, and stop. I think as long as it makes sense in context and it is clearly what they are trying to say then it counts.
