I'm sure they can, but for mine it seems to be more of the voice. All I have to do is say "Hi Jr." he will get so excited and smily! we think he's a momma's boy. Because he seems to only gets that excited with just a hello from me.

I think they are very sensitive to our smell. It seems mine wake up whenever I go to bed even though I dont make a sound. I really do think they smell me.

I breastfeed DS and in order for him to sleep in his crib, he has to be holding one of my t-shirts that I have already worn. I usually give him a different shirt every other morning. I think the mother has a very strong scent.

i really do believe they know your smell and can smell you coming in the room. mine wakes up sometimes if i just go in their room to check on them and i don't even make a noise. one time i was getting a massage at my dads house. my dad & DH were in the other room watching them. well after i was finished i could hear DD crying and i got dressed and walked into living room DH gave me her and she still cried until i talked to her then she shut up immediately. i had these massage oils on and she couldn't get my regular scent. once she heard my voice though she stopped. also sometimes when she fusses at night if i put my hand in the crib without touching her but just by her face she will be quiet like she can smell me. i really believe they know are scent.

It isn't a good study, since it is just my kiddos, but I did have a control: One night, Maya wouldn't go to sleep, so I put a worn shirt of mine in her crib and she slept fine. She started getting up only once to Naomi's getting up twice. This went on for about a week, then, I finally figured it out - Maya still had the shirt and Naomi didn't. So, I put a worn shirt in with Naomi and we are down to getting up once at night. I really think it has to do with the smell.

I read somewhere that babies who are only 1 week old will turn away from nursing pads another mom has worn and turn toward their own mama's, because they can tell the difference from the smell! Babies are so amazing!

Same Here! we will be so quiet and boom the eyes just pop open like nothing. It's crazy. I didn't know that they could smell you like that when me and my BF would joke about now i have to show him this post.
