My baby girl has an awful diaper rash that we can't seem to get rid of. Started about a week ago with a little red bump and now it's spread all over her labia - red raised and sore. we've been using Triple paste and Hydrocortisone 1%, as well as letting her butt air out for at least 30 mins between diaper changes; wiping her but with a washcloth (no wipes) and still it persists. We are going to the Ped for their 9 month check up on Friday but between now and then, anyone have any suggestions? I stooped breastfeeding 2 weeks ago so I doubt that this has anything to do with the rash. Hunter is fine...only Morgan has the rash...help :-(

CORN STARCH. Any time my kids have had a nasty rash (mainly from diahrrea) Corn starch works wonders. Unless it has developed into a yeast infection, then the ped will have to prescribe something.

Could it be a reaction to something she ate? Have you fed her any new solids at the time when it started? I know my kids react to yogurt.. or to juice. I knew if my mom would give them juice because of their red bottoms.

We're experiencing the same thing with my DD1 [Rose]. I changed her brand of diapers and have been only feeding her formula and oatmeal. I feel bad for her poor bum.

 Hope it gets better for you soon!

Is it possible that she has a yeast infection and not just diaper rash. I know that DD had one at one point and we had to use some Nystatin cream for it.

Calmoseptine ointment - you can only get it from a pharmacist but you do not need a prescription for it. It's even thicker than triple paste and it's what my pedi recommends.

sounds like candida infection aka yeast infection. It's a fungus that causes a relatively bright/deep red rash on the labia. You need an antifungal powder for her diaper area - nystatin or mycostatin powder. Call you dr. and tell him/her that you think it's candida so he can prescribe the powder. Also, if it is candida- don't use wipes, use soap/water. good luck.

If its not an infection.... diaper may not be the only reaction. It could be laundry soap, a change in tap water (did they just put in more chlorine?) have you recently bought new clothes (putting baking soda in wash will help that one)? I also use Weleda diaper cream and love it.

WOW! THANK YOU ALL for your wonderful suggestions and recommendations!!!!
@ 2plusbgtwins - Thanks for the cornstarch recommendation. Does get applied like powder - dry?

@Jicjac - I'm not sure if it's a food reaction - they've been eating normal food (blended cos they have only two tiny teeth each) that we eat and so far, right around the time this started, we didn't introduce anything new - except yogurt. But she had yogurt long before the first bump showed up. I'll stop feeding her yogurt for now until we see the ped.

@Suzy - I hope your little Rose feels better and hope you can use some of these ideas as well.

@ DATJmom - I never thot it could be a yeast infection - always thot that came with white discharge which she doesn't have! but we will get the Nystatin though - can't hurt! Thanks!

@aimeethomp - I'll ask the ped about the Calmosetine (sp?) ointment - is it similar to A+D??

@horizon250 - again, thanks for the recommendation. Any difference between the two creams you suggested? we stopped using wipes on her butt as well. no soap, just water. should we use soap? wouldn't cause further irritation?

@mollyjm+2 - we've been using Dreft for all their clothes since they were born and because Morgan also has ezcema, we ALWAYS wash all her new clothes before she wears them. I don't know about the chlorination if the water though....

Again, thank you all for your suggestions. we'll be going shopping after work tonight!!!! :D

[SIZE=10pt]Have you tried switching diaper brands????

Right from birth to 5 months we used pampers on my daughter and she never once had a rash. All of a sudden she developped a horrible rash- looked like burn blisters. I tried all sorts of creams, powders, bare bum etc. Finally on a whim I bought a pkg of huggies. Rash went away in a matter of days. A couple of months later I thought I'd give pampers another go (I just like the feel and fit better) but rash came back with a vengence. I gave the rest of that package to a neighbour and went back to huggies.
Hope things clear up for you

My DD had a large red spot on her labia and the nurse recommended Lotrimin for athlete's foot over-the-counter cream. It took about ten days, but it totally cleared up.

My other DD had constant moderate red rash on her bottom. I also switched from Pampers to Huggies and that got rid of the red rash which turned out to be from the friction of the diaper and Huggies is smoother on the inside than Pampers. I put a little ointment on her bottom and lots of corn starch over it to help prevent friction rubs for maintenance.
