Just wondering if there is any average age where they stop putting every single thing that will fit, into their mouths??? My girls bangs hang in their eyes all the time and I can't put anything in their hair at all or they will either pull it out of their own hair or pull it out of eachother's hair, and put it into their mouths so I can't having them chocking on hair barretts!!! I know there isn't a set in stone age, but just an idea?

My dd is 4 and still puts things in her mouth. She actually swallowed a barrett when she was little. I know how you feel. My Isabella had very, very thick, long hair and it was in her eyes constantly.

Yeah, mine are 3 and still do it too. It worries me and i am constantly having to take small objects away from them. They enjoy playing with their older brothers Legos (the little ones) but I have to watch them carefully because I'll find them putting those in their mouths.

Going through the same thing here. Our girls are around the same age. Lorien especially puts EVERYTHING in her mouth and it's very frurstrating. Same thing with the hair issue. Arwen will leave stuff in her hair but Lorien pulls everything out and I too am scared that she will choke on a barette or one of the little hair ties. I must say, "Lorien, NO MOUTH" about 80 times a day. She is getting a little bit better about it but it's still a major issue around here. Her hair is starting to fall into her eyes so I don't know what we are going to do. Maybe headbands?? Or large barettes with bows or something on it that I don't have to worry about her swallowing.

My girls are almost five and Kaitlyn still puts everything into her mouth. She also was more attached to her pacifier when she was little. For some reason she just has a fixation for putting things in her mouth. She doesn't put her hair accessories in her mouth though. I agree with the pp, maybe you could use a headband or a larger clip that won't be a choking hazard. Does she have cut bangs that go above her eyebrows or does she have her hair all the same length? If she doesn't have her hair cut shorter in the front maybe you could have it cut to keep it out of her eyes for now.

I asked this question when my DDs were about 12 months old, although it was mostly pertaining to stuff found outside -- rocks, twigs, cigarette butts, etc. Most people said it got better (maybe not all the way, but a lot) around 15-18 months, and I found this to be true for us. In fact I had a friend over the other day who has 14-month-old twins, and they were putting everything in their mouths, and I realized I had forgotten all about that stage!

They do still put things in their mouths just because they feel like chewing on whatever it is. But it's not the compulsion it used to be -- as if there is no other way to experience something besides putting it in their mouths.

As far as the bangs, though, my girls' still just hang in their eyes. I try to keep them trimmed, but they will NOT keep barrettes in. They don't eat them, they just fiddle with them until they fall out. I've given up.

My daughter stopped around 19 months. It made things much less stressful because I didn't have to watch her. She is now almost 2.5 years old and thinks it's funny to put things in her mouth again (all of a sudden). So I guess, like everything, it depends on the kid. And, like everything, there seems to be waves. Waves when they stop, waves when they start....just like to keep mom on her toes. :)

I think it's a little bit better for us, but there are definite favorites for chewing - bows, crayons (yuck) pet hair! DD will wait for the cat to walk by and pull out hair so she can examine it and then put one piece in her mouth. Grosses me out.
