I've let Noam and Sapir try to wipe themselves after pooping, but I stand there watching because I don't want them to get it all over them. I suppose I need to let them practice and then they'll get good at it.

When did your kids start wiping themselves without help?

We let Maggie go by herself somewhere between 2 1/2 and 3. She doesn't like a mess, so we never really had to worry about her not doing a good job of wiping. I found stains in maybe 2 pairs of panties, and that's it. But I think it really depends on the child and the situation. If she is in a cranky mood, or has had a lot of food that might make more of a mess, I will still go and check sometimes.

Mitchell is a late bloomer when it comes to wipping. He still does not do it right and he is 6. We got him started about 3-4 years of age. But I still have to help most of the time!!! YUK!!

My boys are 3.5yr...will be 4yrs at Christmas. Ben wipes himself most of the time now and does a pretty effective job. He has been trained for close to a year. My other son trained later and needs total assistance.

The trick that helps Ben wipe himself so well is "Cottonelle Flushable wipes". They are sold in the toilet paper aisle. I leave the container on the top of every toilet seat in our house. They are wet (like a baby wipe) and make wiping much more efficient plus they can be flushed. I also use them when I wipe them. It makes it much easier for me as well.

Good question! This is driving me nuts! Joel started wiping himself pretty much as soon as he trained, but he wasn't trained until he was four. Aaron and Connor were trained right before their third bday, and wiping is still an issue. Whenever we decide to let them do it, we end up with an entire roll of paper in the toilet. I can't stand their and watch, God only knows what the other two will be doing during that time! I tried the flushable wipes, and they used way to many as well. I look forward to reading more responses!.I love getting all the advice on TS!

I started letting my kids try as soon as they started going in the potty. We have supervised wiping~so Mom can make sure we are clean. They try first and then they have to let Mom have a look! They do a better job because they don't want me to have to do it for them now. I also leave flushable wet wipes for them in case they have troubles. It is worth the $$$.

My ds who is almost 6 just finally mastered it the beginning of summer. He refused to do it a year ago but now almost always gets everything.

My sons are almost 6 and have recently mastered it as well. They always try, and have since they trained at 3, but they've had a couple experiences of not doing a great job (it made them very uncomfortble) so they started asking me to check. I was fine checking, but now that they are off to Kindergarten so they really need to be able to do it without asking for a clean-check afterwards.

THis is my goal, too, that they be able to handle it by the start of kindergarten. My will be a bit over 5.5 when they start.

Thank you all for your responses... it's been a concern of mine too lately and I'm so thankful to be able to get some feedback about what others have done or are doing.

I think that I'm going to have them try first and then I'll do a check after.
