At what age did you take away their binkis?

Okay ladies....binki question for those who let their kids have binkis.....WHEN did you take them away, HOW and how painful was it? I tell myself everyday that I will only give them the binkis during naps and at night but when they start whining, I plug their mouthes right away! I can't stand listening to whining. I swear it raises my blood pressure!

We haven't taken them away yet but plan to around 6-7 months ... maybe sooner, they are already shoving their fists/fingers/blanket in their mouths if their nuk isn't around to comfort them. We didn't even want to use pacifiers but they were so colicky, the pacifiers helped so much. I know what you mean, it's so easy to calm a crying child the moment they start up by popping a nuk in ... bad habit!!! Just my opinion but I would try to wean them as soon as possible - to me you either wean them as young as you can so they learn other comfort measures and aren't that attached yet, or you wean them when they are older and you can just tell them that the Binkie Fairy is coming to take thier nuks to BinkieLand or something.

I allowed Micah to keep his until he was around two. I look at it this way, I don't want someone to take away my comfort items (cell phone, purse, chewing gum etc)- why would I do that to my child when they really can't understand? When Micah was 2-2.5 we talked about how he was my "Big Boy" now and he needed to do some things like pee in the potty and not take sleep with his bink anymore. Both processes went fairly smoothly, not an overnight thing but I didn't want it to be traumatic.

I'm sure you will get a wide variety of comments, this is simply IMHO

We just took them away right before they turned two. We brought the baby home on Monday and I think it was Wednesday or Thursday when we took the binkys away. The first couple of days were rough, but they did okay after that.

Caitlyn lost hers at about 4 1/2 months she would only take the one from the hospital we tried every other one out there she would not take them. well our dog chewed her binky up so guess we had no choice to take it away she gave it up easy but took up a fav blanket.

We took them away last weekend at 2 years 8 months. About time, eh? They are still having a rough time, and haven't napped since, but I guess I had to do it. Nights aren't so much of a problem, probably because they are so tired from not napping.

Anyway, it's not fun, but I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

The boys were over 2 when we took theirs, and it was a total nightmare! I had tried to take them away a couple times before, but always caved in and let them have them. We waited way too long and they were way too attached, we vowed not to make that mistake again.

With DD we took hers when she was 1, on her first birthday actually. She did awesome! There were a couple of whiny days, but no crying fits.

We'll do the same with C&C when the time comes.

We took ds1 binki away at 1 too. We started it as a gradual process-only at naps and bedtime. Eventually we took it completely away. A little whiny for a couple days and then he was fine. HTH!

We did it at 6 months. It wasn't bad. I phased them out by using them only at nap/bedtime (just to relax them, they didn't get to take it to bed). For the first week I did keep them with me while out in public (for my sanity), but never ended up having to use them. After about a week we dumped them altogether. It wasn't a big deal (and I thought it would be a HUGE nightmare).

I don't know what it is about the binkis, but I kinda feel like it's good for them. They've done studies to show that it reduces the chance of SIDS, so I don't plan on taking them away any time soon. I figure probably by the age they're ready to potty train, they'll be ready to give them up.

There was a really good article in American Baby a couple months back on how to give up the binki's. They also had a couple moms who gave creative ideas on how they did it & I just loved a couple of them. One mom sat her toddler down & told him/her that Elmo needed binkis for all the babies on Sesame Street, so they boxed them all up and took them to the Post Office....she just attached a note to the box that said, "Please throw this in the trash when we leave." She saved 1 binki & they went to the Build a Bear store and had it stuffed inside the teddy bear. Another mom tied all the binkis to balloons and they set them free in the air for the angels (don't know where they landed, though). Anyway, I liked those kind of ideas b/c it IS a big deal for a child to give up their binki and that way they're a part of the process. Another idea was they gradually cut off the end with scissors until there wasn't anything left.

I was also going to say that! And I read in a mag that it doesn't really effect their teeth. The bottle is much worse on their teeth than a paci.

Mine still have theirs and I do plan on taking them by 3.

Around 9mths, I think they were starting to teeth. They kept spitting the dummy out and I found myself forcing it back into their mouths just so they could spit it out again. Then I said to myself "why am I forcing them to have a dummy". We gave it up then and their without any probs.
