At what age can you trust them?

It never fails, I can be up for an hour working around the house and the second I sit down to either rest or work on my laptop, one of the girls will need to go potty. They can do it themselves and I would love to leave the door open so they can just go as they need to. Anytime I try this though, they either get into everything, overflow the water in the sink, or flush a whole roll of toilet paper.

My question is, at what age can you trust them to go to the bathroom by themselves? They could do it now if they would just leave everything else alone!!!

Mine were good shortly after they turned 3. But they did start preschool about 2 months after they turned 3, and the rules there carried over to home--so I think that helped.

Mine already go on their own.......they just go and then come back. I guess I am lucky?!! They don't like to be alone and so I think that helps. Should I be waiting for this to change?! Oh no?!!!!

Catherine is good at going by herself if she is wearing pants that are easy to pull up & down. Andrew can't be trusted with the sink! He likes to play in the water, turn on the hot water, etc. He loves to test limits.

Mine go on their own, but I have to keep an ear out for Jesse. he likes to explore the bathroom and has made his fair share of messes. He also likes to use a whole roll of toilet paper on himself. But its getting better as he gets older.

Mine were good a little before 3, I was leaving the door open. My house is small though so I knew when they went in there and I would listen to make sure everything was going ok.

I don' think there's an answer for all kids. Sometimes my boys are very good, they go in, make peep, wash and leave. Other times I find them clogging the sink and climbing to pull things out of the cabinets over the potty!
Berkley never did any of that.

I so agree, Amanda. Hannah goes #1 on her own, but I have to wipe her for #2. Usually, I can trust her in the bathroom but sometimes I find TP rolls unraveled, my make-up in broken pieces or holes gauged in it and let's not forget the fun of emptying the soap dispenser...
