At what age can they play on their own for bits of time with you in another room or another level?

At what age did you let your kids play on their on where you didn't have to literally by in the room with them the whole time? Meaning they can be downstairs or upstairs with you on a different level, when you can hear them and check in on them..

I started allowing this about 3-4 months ago.

We've been doing that since 1, but the rooms were 100% baby proof. Now they get in trouble more but we still let them play in the living room or in their room, as there's nothing really dangerous in reach.

I have allowed mine to be one another level or in another room since they were about 18 months. They usually didn't last more than a few minutes in another room and still don't last more than five minutes without me in the same room.

I have never let them play on a different level of the house than me, but they have been able to play independently in different rooms from me since age 2.

Same here. The key is babyproof, babyproof, babyproof. And I never go further than I can go without directly hearing what's going on in there.

Never on a different level. DD was still putting things in her mouth at age 4 when we moved from a two story to an apartment.

Different rooms---if baby proofed about age 3. If not, more recently at age 4.5 or so.

My house is 1 story but I let them play on the other end of the house without me. I have to go check on them every 10 to 15 minutes, and be prepared for a big mess of toys.

At least a year ago. With appropriately babyproofed areas.

Well, I would now and would have started several months ago. However, they feel the need to give me a constant play-by-play or have me in the same room constantly. <_<

I would say since around 18 months. We have a tri-level; bedrooms and bathroom upstairs, main level is kitchen, dining and living room and the basement is our family room. Our family room/basement has been baby proofed since they began to crawl. I still have a gate at the bottom of the stairs so they can't come upstairs whenever they want. As I type this, I am upstairs in my bedroom and they are in the basement watching Toy Story.

At almost 3, I'll be on the main level and one or both will be upstairs in their room or playroom and I know they are safe. I still have locks on the bathroom and my bedroom so they can't get in but other than that they can go where ever they want.
