at a loss

Ivy has had a week from hell. (Which means we have too. <_< ) A week ago, she threw up once during the night. No follow up, except some occasional mushy poops. But ever since, she's been lethargic, low appetite, doesn't drink much (and usually this girl chugs down anything in sight), she's up too early in the morning or in the middle of the night (and usually she's a great sleeper), and she is UNBELIEVABLY cranky. Inconsolable screaming.

I took her to the pedi yesterday, and everything checked out fine. I thought about teething (her top 2 yr molars are almost all the way through, bottom are still on the way), but whenever we try Tylenol or ibuprofen, it doesn't even make a dent. (And usually drugs work wonders with teething for us.)

So I am totally at a loss. It seems like way too long for a stomach bug to be holding on, and the doctor said she seemed fine, but she is just not herself. She is insanely miserable, and I can't figure out why. (Oh, no big life changes or anything either.) And despite being a total chatterbox in every other respect, she will NEVER tell me if something hurts or what's bothering her. :headbang: Probably never going to figure it out, but does anyone have any ideas?

, Holly. Wish I had some great ideas for you.

Toothache, like from a cavity or something?

That's really all I can think of since she's already been checked out by her pediatrician. :(

I hope she gets back to being herself again soon.

Oh gracious, that would have me worried too! I'm afraid I don't have much of an idea either. I know it's normal for them to go through phases of not having an appetite, but to add the sleeping problems and attitude problems on top of that seems odd. Did the ped seem to agree that it was unusual? I think if she were mine, and this kept up another week, I'd definitely bring her back in. Hope she bounces back to her old self real soon!

I think maybe teething, but not pain from the teeth moving/cutting. . .her stomach is upset from all the drool so that's why the tylenol/ibuprofin isn't working.

Mine had a stomach bug that lasted a good 10 days. They were not themselves the entire time. Or teething... those molars are a b!tch. I hope she feels better soon

Has she been to the dentist? My first thought was maybe some sort of tooth pain. That can be really painful and something the pedi wouldn't be able to see.

It's also possible she is temporarily lactose intolerant from a stomach bug. We've had that happen a few times. We cut out all dairy for about a week and fed that child very bland BRAT diet foods for a few days. I hope you get to the bottom of it soon!

Has she had a fever (low grade or otherwise) the whole time? Is she refusing to walk or play? Are her fingers peeling? Does she have red eyes or conjunctivitis? I'm not a doctor, but last fall Allison was diagnosed with Kawasaki's Disease, which has a whole range of symptoms, no test for it, and any of the symptoms can appear or disappear pretty much at will. It's relatively rare, but that just means that not all doctors are well acquainted with it, and it is hard to diagnose even when the doctor is on the ball. If she has any of the signs I listed above you may want to call your doctor back, just to rule it out (there are pretty serious cardiovascular issues that can arise if it's not treated in a timely fashion). I hope she feels better soon.

Totally agree! We are going through the 2 yr. molars right now and :gah: I cannot wait until it is over!! Popsicles do my kiddos wonders. Giving them something cold to naw on even when tylenol or motrin doesn't seem to help.

Even if it is lasting effects from the stomach bug, popsicles will help keep her hydrated if she doesn't seem interested in anything else.

 I hope she feels better soon.

Thanks for all the input, guys!

We're still having ups and downs. She's having some better moments, but also some screaming insanely and/or totally listless moments. Oh, and she's also having these clay-colored poops now and then. Sometimes she talks about her tummy hurting. Man, this has been going on a long time.

No Kawasaki's symptoms, fortunately, but thank you for bringing it up!

I don't think it's teething, because she wasn't acting like this as the top molars were coming through. Might check with a dentist, though. (Which means we'll have to find one - I totally hated the practice they went to for their first dental checkup - the waiting room was literally like 6x6 feet and not air-conditioned and crowded, and we had to wait 45 minutes!!! :headbang: )

I think I'll call the pedi again tomorrow, even though she'll probably be about as "helpful" as before. Sigh. Thanks for listening and for all the suggestions!

Tom's going through something very similar...it's hard to tell sometimes if he claims that his tummy is hurting because I ask leading questions, but he kind of writhes around. He threw up last night and was fine today, except for the crankiness, refusal to walk, and general lassitude.

Let us know if you find an answer! And hugs to all of you.

 to all of you. I hope you can figure something out. Jacob only has 2 teeth left and they are really wreaking havoc on our life, but I know you said you don't think it's that. I hope that you figure out what it is or that it just passes very soon!

for sure! my pedi thought joey's teeth were ok, as did my adult dentist. but the pedi dentist took one look (when he was only 16 months old) and knew he had two cavaties... so, i'm just saying...

i also think it could be something in her tummy that's just lasting a long time. if colds and flus can last so long, seems like a stomach bug or virus could, too.

good luck and hang in there! it can't last forever!
