i've been limiting myself to one caffeinated beverage a day and two or 3 cans of diet, caffeine free sodas a day....the diet caffeine free sodas all have aspartame in them (and so does my every other day large diet cherry limeade from sonic)....is this amount of aspartame safe? i know i should be drinking water, but i have to have my carbonation!

i've been trying to switch to club soda with splenda-sweetened fruit juice added to it and that's been really good. but as far as fast food drinks, it's aspartame or nothing.

Personally, I chose to forgo artificial sweeteners while pregnant, it was difficult....but i felt it was important. I drank Gatorade, but I know that doesn't help you with the carbonation.

Consider sweetening with actual fruit? Lemon and lime slices are great!

I always opted to Splenda when faced with a choice for artificial sweetners. Then again, I also tried to stay away from artificial sweetners too. At least they make Diet Coke with splenda now! :)

My wife has been mixing cranberry juice or orange juice with seltzer...

If it makes you feel better, I had plenty of Diet Pepsi all the way through my pg. I had lots of water too, but if I wanted an occasional pepsi, I had it! I also would drink decaf iced tea, and crystal light.

I'm a real stickler about these things. I wouldn't do caffeine in any amount in my first or early 2nd trimester, then I allowed 1 cup of tea a couple of times a week after that. I don't like the health risks associated with aspartame when not pregnant, so I would never risk it when pregnant. I don't trust Splenda.

I've been drinking Pellegrino as my beverage of choice.

I honestly would say no to splenda and aspartame. I have heard that splenda is more harmful then what they say.
So I stopped both. I also try to limit caffiene to one glass of tea every other day and thats it. With my daughter I drank NO caffiene and was anal about it and she came at 38 weeks, vaginally and 8.5 lbs and healthy, so I am not gonna risk it.
I say go with what is safest and be a little paranoid :)

Do you have specific reason for sticking to artificially sweetened products? E.g. Gestational diabetes/Type 2 diabetes? If not, I'd advise you against it. Although scientific research does not have conclusive results on human use of artificial sweetener during pregnancy, it is generally not advised. I understand that carbonated beverage helps in many ways, but you can always go with fresh fruit juice and club soda, or jus plain soda if you can take it that way.

With many controversial issues revolving around artificial sweetener, I opt to remove it from my diet once I found out that I was pregnant. The irony is - I'm a dietitian and I'm always telling ppl to choose low-cal beverage!! Hahaha... :rotflmbo:

I'm a stickler about artificial sweeteners too... I definately wouldn't do aspartame, and probably not splenda either. Some of the flavored club sodas are really good especially if you combine with a little juice. Or why not choose regular non-caffinated sodas like Sprite or Ginger Ale?

Don't worry about the amount of artifical sweeteners you've already consumed - nothing you can do about it now. Also, tons of kids are born just fine every day even though their moms eat and drink only junk food. The only thing you can do is make the best choices possible for the future...

I didn't have any artificial sweetners at all while pregnant and nursing. But I think that's an extreme measure. I'm sure a few diet pops won't hurt anything!

I like my carbonation and my diet drinks. Did with the boys and do now.

I do tend to drink Sprite (or something like it) in lieu of my usual diet coke when in the mood for something carbonated. I still have my cup of coffee in the morning and if I want a caffeine free diet dr. pepper or diet coke in the afternoon, I don't stress about it. I also drink lots of water too.

I think moderation when it comes to caffeine and sweeters is the way to go. I think three carbonated beverages a day may be a bit much but it's not terrible (especially if you're drinking LOTS of water between those).

My husband is an MD and told me not to consume aspartame or other sweeteners except Splenda while pregnant. I refused any... even the splenda... i drank flavored seltzer water and root beer when i wanted pop. root beer had calories, but no caffeine...

Mmm root beer has been one of my major cravings. BTW, Barqs (I think it's Barqs) has caffeine but as a general rule, root beer does not have caffeine.

I agree with the others that in moderation it's probably fine. I just don't like what aspartame did to my grandmother and as I mentioned, I don't trust that Splenda is safe (it's too chemical). I don't touch the stuff when not pregnant, so would never touch it while pregnant.

I didn't have any caffeine or artificial sweetener in the first two trimesters I lived off sprite and root beer type drinks now with the heat I guess I crave soda every so often. I drink about two caffeinated drinks a week, but a ton of water too..I never have any artificial sweetener I never really used it (hate the taste of diet soda) and I do not completely trust it so It wasn't that hard for me to cut it out completely.

    Hi,

When I was pregnant with my son I ate whatever I wanted to eat. I just ate in moderation. My son was born at 41 weeks a healthy 8lbs .03oz. He was healthy and so was I. With this pregnancy I am eating what I want to eat. As long as I am not out of control as far as what to eat I think it's ok to eat whatever I want. I eat lots of fruits, veggies, pasta and lots of water. I also eat poultry, red meat and seafood. I was never a sweets person but if I want cake I rather have good old sugar or honey so sweeten my food. There have been so many reports regarding artificial sweeteners that I would rather stick to the real thing. The key is everything in moderation and keep in mind that just because I am carrying multiple babies does not give me the license to go crazy with the calories. My thoughts are not for those of us who are diabetics or struggling with weight issues. If it's ok with your doctor, eat the foods you want to eat.

Please be safe, be healthy, talk to your doctor, and enjoy your pregnancy! :good:

If you need the carbonation, have you tried carbonated water with a splash of juice in it? Or can you drink sugary drinks? I tried to avoid artificial sweeteners, although occasionally I would have one and not stress about it. Still while breastfeeding I avoid them. I know tons of sugar isn't great, so I have water with a splash of juice as my favorite beverage :)
