    Hello all,

My daughters will be one on Saturday and I'm interested in getting them some art supplies. They like holding onto crayons and drawing, but haven't quite mastered the fact that crayons are just for drawing (and not chewing on). Do any of you have recommendations for art supplies that worked well for this age?

    Thanks,
    Trish

Hello! My girls are also one and just had the birthday, they received the best crayons ever. They are made by Crayola and I believe they are called Doodles or somethings. They are fat round characters for them to hold onto. Mine (who usually eat everything) do not eat these.

    Hope this helps,
    Jen

We got these too for their first bday and maybe I got duds, but the crayons would never stay in the character thingys and kept falling out.

Fingerpainting is fun (well supervised, of course!)

We got the boys Tadoodles for Easter! They're fun! They boys totally don't get the concept of drawing yet, and prefer to bang the crayons together and/or throw them on the ground.

Crayola has some great products for toddlers. Your children may be a little young for some of their items, but they have some wonderful "mess free' art supplies that don't stain your walls, carpets, furniture, clothes, etc. We use the Mess Free pens and they have finger paints, too. Here is their website: Crayola Color Wonder Products

Honestly, we gave them crayons and just had to really stay on top of them for a while before they learned that they can't put the crayons in their mouth. We must have said "NO MOUTH!" a gazillion times. Everytime they start to put it towards their mouth, we would say "No Mouth! Paper only!" Eventually they got it. I also learned that crayons are non-toxic. They are basically just wax with some coloring. I have heard that they make for some really interesting and sometimes beautiful and colorful poops   I have heard that the the tadoodles (or whatever those things are called) are not so great. You have to hold them at a very specific angle for them to work and with young toddlers that can be hard. I actually went to washable markers soon after because they were sooooooooo much easier than crayons. The problem with crayons is that they have to learn to press down hard and move it at the same time. Once they got markers, they were really drawing and drawing away!
