Are your 4 year olds still wearing pull ups?

    Hi Friends,
My gals are finally doing well with potty training and even stay dry all night now. But- they still have the occasional accident at home so I am reluctant to go out without them in pullups. They turned 4 yesterday.

We go to the park a lot but our parks don't have bathrooms. I am afraid to go out without having them in pull ups- should I stop doing this? When did you stop using pull ups? What do you do when you go somewhere without bathrooms nearby?

    Thanks!

With my oldest I never used pull ups, even when she was potty training. We just went right to underwear. I always made sure she went to the bathroom before we left the house.

We ocassionally go behind a tree, I just hold them and bring along tissues and antiseptic wipes. Pullups may set them back.

Around 3 we quit wearing pull ups out (before that we didn't wear them at home). However, we always, ALWAYS take a "last pee" before going anywhere, and I make sure a half hour passes between large drinks and leaving so that there is a reasonable chance they'll get it out. If we're going to be out for a long time, or making multiple stops, I'll schedule one that has restrooms. I don't make it an option in these cases, I'll just announce we're going to take a pee break, and we do it. Lots of times you can ask if they need to, and they'll say no, and 10 minutes later they need to. I find it's better just to establish that "this is the way we do things" and have them go.

I suggest a mandatory "try to pee" before you go out also, that usually works for us.

We only used pull-ups for outings and quit using them just after they turned three. We also had a potty seat in the van.

We stopped using them, except for nighttime at 3 years, 2 months--maybe a bit before. I have found that mine had many fewer accidents when out and about than they did at home. Fortunately, I also have boys, so they have been know to use an out of the way tree--they also LOVE port-a-potties!

We didn't use pull ups, they went to underwear whether we were home or out. We did always do the right before we leave bathroom try but we continued on with life as usual and if we were out and about and someone had to use the bathroom we cut our excursion short in order to find a restroom. It didn't happen very often.

We went cold turkey. Took lots of extra clothes. The potty went with us in the car (Park problem solved) and worst case scenario. Yes, you do what you gotta do, find a tree and let them go either on their own or hold them in a sitting position above the ground. Oh and definitely train yourself to announce washroom time before you leave the house.
