Are you supposed to stand behind them with your arms out?

That was basically my question. He pulls up on everything, but sometimes falls straight back. How long is it usually before they get this walking thing down?

I think as parents we do our best to ensure or babies are safe and keep falls to a minimum. With that being said, Kids fall. A LOT! Unfortunately we can't always be there to catch them. I always did my best to make sure their play area was safe, and caught them when I could. I also think that falling helps teach them cause and effect, and helps them perfect the art of being mobile. Falls happen, and try not to stress out too much about it.

I'm with Kyrsten. I just tried to make sure they were in a safe area where, if they fell, they would not get hurt. They are going to fall tons between now & walking well!

Yup tons of falling and head bonking going on here. I swear they have permanent bruises on their heads!!! That being said, Jack started pulling up at 8 months...he still doesn't walk...he took 11 steps last weekend but other than that its just a few here and there before he starts running and falls. He didn't get brave enough for the steps until around 10 months. They also will eventually start falling on their butts...then its easier to not be paranoid everytime they fall:)

    Fun, isn't it??

I too just try to make the area as safe as possible, try to keep them barefoot because they slide less that way, and hope they don't get a big old goose egg right before you have pictures taken! :D

My ds has been pulling up to standing for about a week, and he's started transferring from our leg to the couch and stuff the last day or two. He's 8.5 months old!

I remember asking my pediatrician if they could do serious damage to their heads (brains!) by falling, and he said "From standing? No. Only if they fall off of something higher than their two feet." What was kind of funny is that I had one dare-devil, who would pull herself up to a standing position, throw both hands in the air and throw herself backwards towards the floor (while I would scream "NOOOOOO!" and run across the room to catch her.) I found that this one very quickly learned how to throw her little palms down beside her on the floor and lifted her head, so that her hands hit the floor and her head did not until she was ready to put it down gently. Her twin, on the other hand, would pull herself up on something be proud, and then suddenly would cling onto it for dear life and then she would start to cry because she didn't want to let go because she didn't want to fall on her little bottom:)
She almost never fell because she would cry until someone rescued her. The daredevil learned to walk first, about 6 weeks before the other one.

I have a few "fallers" as well! They both think they can pull up on one item and then magically luncge for another one without falling. The biggest daredevil of the 2 has learned to tuck his head so when he falls his head doesn't hit the floor. The other one is slowly learning how to creep towards what he wants.
