Are they too old for a Leapster?

My mom is looking at getting them each a Leapster for Christmas. All the reviews I've read refer to it as a preschool gaming system, but say it is for kids ages 4-8. That's more than a little confusing! So, for those who are familiar with the Leapster, will by 5yos enjoy it or will they be bored with it in weeks?

If it helps, my kids are around a first-grade level in most things academic.

We gave our twins a Leapster last year for Christmas (two weeks after they turned 5). The loved them then and still love them now. There are games you can buy for different ages. You can see little clips on most of the games on the leapster site.

We have had one since they were almost 4, but they just turned 5 and still love them!

Mine are at a 1st + academic level and enjoy the games a lot. We have some for ages 5-8 and 4-7....they enjoy them all. Mostly they like the ones that deal with subjects they like (princess or fairy) vs the subject matter (academic). It only gets harder to do as the child gets more right.

I think as long as they dont have older kids pushing the benefits of DSI or another system (think close friends or older siblings/cousins) then it is a great system for this age.

My little cousin wanted a DSI like her older sister....but found it hard (at age 5) to use.

No my girls are 5 and have new leapster explorers. They live them and play with them a lot. There are still somethings that they need help with.

My little girls have them and they will be turning 5 and 6 in a few months. They love them. Like PPs have said, you can get ganes at different levels.

Mine will be 5 in February and they love their Leapsters. :good: They got them last year for Christmas. I agree there are games that go up to age 8. I know many of the games, academic wise, are still above my kids' heads, so they will be able to enjoy them for awhile still. :good:

Thanks! I thought it should be good until I read the description of it being a "preschool gaming system." Glad to know it will work for them. I think they are still pretty young for a DSI, so this should be perfect!

I actually think they'd be difficult for a preschooler in my mind. My girls are peek so I guess I see preschool as 2-4...
