are mini cribs a reasonable option?

I am in the process of planning my twin nursery, and watching the room shrink before my eyes! I am hoping to get some feedback and advice on using mini cribs instead os standard size ones. These are my first babies, so I feel I am flying blind on every subject. I don't even really know how long they stay in cribs and how big they may be by that time. I don't want a crib that will be too small before I am done with it, but a smaller option seems worth exploring. Any advice or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.

I am not sure as I have never seen a mini crib before but I do know that my 11.5 month old seems to take up a lot of room in her regular sized crib now. ;) Good luck, hopefully someone else has experience with them!

Our twins just got out of there cribs and they are 2 and a half and if we were not pregnant again and needing the cribs they would most likley still be in there cribs till 3 years old.
not sure how big the mini cribs but i would go for the regular size ones as i would hate for you to have to go out and buy other cribs later. i got my two matching cribs and changing table from another twin mom for $250.00 check out craigslist and local twin groups and perhaps you can get a good deal.
    Hope this helps :)

I've never heard of mini-cribs, but you would eventually need regular cribs anyway. Most kids stay in their cribs until they are 2-3 years old (sometimes longer). At that age they would be way too big for a mini crib.

I say just get regular cribs and save your money.

I have the Davinci Emily Mini Cribs & LOVE THEM.
I am probably in the minority on this one, but they have worked out great for us.
The girls bedroom isn't that big & we wanted enough room in there for 2 cribs, changing table (which is gone now), dresser & a few other things.
I didn't want it too be too crowded in there & so they worked out wonderfully!

My girls are 17 months now & have plenty of room in their cribs. I am assuming around 2 years old we might try to transition to twin beds (the cribs make up into twin beds) with the extra long rails (from One Step Up catalog) to keep them safe.

Here is a picture of how our mini cribs fit in our room :)

    Good luck!

I have very mixed feelings about our mini cribs. Ours are from Million Dollar Baby. The boys room is big enough for reg. sized cribs, but we knew we wanted them to have twin beds, not full (which most reg. cribs convert to). My boys are 20.5 months and we are moving them to the twin beds this weekend. I'm dreading it. They are just too big for their mini cribs (75th percentile for height) and are cramped. I'm hoping the transition won't be hard, but am wishing we got reg. cribs (that weren't convertible) and just bought two beds when they were 3. They JUST started sleeping through the night and I have a feeling my sleepy nights will be effected next week. It's a tough choice. I didn't regret it until now. I'll let you know if I feel differently next week! :)

I also got the mini cribs for our twins, and they are now 2 1/2 and I JUST got them big girl/boy beds. They fit just fine in them at 2 1/2. If you think it would be a better fit for the room size, I say go for it.

Mine stayed in their full size cribs until 3y3m, and it was a pretty smooth transition. These being my only kids, I might have thought (before they were born) that moving to toddler or twin beds around age 2 was reasonable (and for many families it is), but I'm really glad we didn't have to do it.

So, I wouldn't buy mini cribs unless you're planning to move them straight to twin/toddler beds when they outgrow the mini cribs.

If space were a BIG concern I would do minis--but that said we stayed in cribs until 3 years and the transition to big girl beds was great....any earlier and it would have been a mess. There is no way they could have fit in minicribs for 3 years. They are already outgrowing their toddler beds (conversion from crib)and will need a twin soon.

$ wise a convertable crib (crib, toddler, twin) is the best financial choice, but if size is your biggest concern then go mini and upgrade beds as needed!

*side note, my girls did not sleep much in cribs the first few months even due to severe reflux (bouncers/carseats/PNP)--they may have outgrown a minicrib before we even used it!*
