Are any Easter-type candies NOT a choking Hazard? I can't think of any that aren't, wanted to ask what other ppl think?

We don't usually want our 17 month old boys having junk food or sweets, but would like to give them a little to experience the Americanized Easter-type experience- commercialized as it is i remember having so much fun as a kid... just a little.

What I can think of, peeps (asked earlier), jelly beans, little eggs, etc... are all the right size or consistency to get stuck in the windpipe. Can anyone think of anything that is OK?

Right now we're thinking a sugar cookie w/the hard frosting (they eat crackers, after all) but can't think of anything else...

    thanks!

What about a hollow chocolate bunny? They can gnaw off small bites and it should melt in their mouths pretty easily.

My 18 month old loves the smaller versions of the Reese's eggs & can eat them with no problem, so if yours can have peanut butter those would be a good idea. I don't feel like it's Easter unless you've had at least 2 of those- we all love them!

I agree with the hollow bunny, I don't think they would be likely to choke on that!

I also agree with the hollow bunny, mine were 15 months old last Easter so they did not get any candy last year. We just put out plastic eggs for them to find and they had a blast doing that and gave them a basket with tadoodles, pads, and other items from the dollar store.

They do sell mini-M&Ms; they're super tiny, so even if they were inhaled they couldn't block the windpipe. I might let my guys have some chocolate, but my in-laws like to buy those Dove egg things, so I would have to break them into very small pieces first. Definitely no jelly beans, though. :( Makes me sad because I LOVE jellybeans and consider them an essential part of the Easter experience! ;) There will be time for them when they get older.

Other than that, they will be getting home made sugar cookies and eating the Easter meal with us. Knowing my guys they will enjoy the meat more than the dessert anyway!

Peeps- those marshmellow chicks and bunnies. That is what I have sent the grandkids since they turned one for easter and other holidays.

I googled this topic and I have now lost the site, but the things that I can remember (and what I will be putting in my lo's easter baskets) are: cheddar bunnies, animal crackers, mini m&m's, fruit cheerios, mini cadbury creme eggs, hollow chocolate bunny, sidewalk chalk, playdoh, crayons & coloring book, dvd, and a mini stuffed animal. My mother bought peeps, but after reading what a choking hazard they are (elsewhere on this site) they will not be eating peeps this easter.

We bought a lot of those plastic eggs and put puffs and different kinds of cereal in them. They honestly didn't know the difference! We've actually banned peeps and jelly beans in all Easter baskets because we have so many little ones around.

I have to say, I LOVE the idea that Brigette and the PP had about putting fruity/sugared cereals in the Easter eggs. My guys had Fruit Loops exactly once and thought they were da bomb! Sugary cereal is enough of a treat for them to enjoy, without the choking hazard of most candies. I think I'm going to steal this idea for this Easter!

    :thanks:
