Anyone's twins look more alike as they grow?

I'm not sure if my girls are identical or not - but I was pretty sure that they weren't for the past few months. When they were born, they looked identical, but after a while I could totally tell them apart easily. Most other people could tell them apart also, but it may have partly been because Abby was always a little bigger (weight and height) than Rylee. Now the last few days when I look at them, I don't know which is which! How horrible am I!?! Yesterday when I got home from work I was talking to Rylee and calling her Abby for quite awhile until I looked at Rylee and realized she was Abby! What to heck is going on? I never get them confused...

I always thought that as time went on, they would look less alike not more alike. Has anyone who has twins that aren't identical went through periods of time where they looked exactly alike? My doctor told me that they were fraternal because they each had their own sac and placenta, but I know that they still could be identical, right?

My Mom who babysits them every day says she can hardly tell them apart anymore and neither can my husband - so I know it's not just me.

My twins are identical, but I think they go through phases where they look exactly alike and where they look totally different. About a month ago, it was difficult for anyone to tell them apart. Lately they seem to be looking more and more different to me and others.

    Kim,

I have the same thing going on but in reverse. I was told my girls are identical because they shared a placenta, but it turns out they could be fraternal even with one placenta if it fused early. At birth they looked completely different (25% size difference). By about three months they looked a ton alike but now they look more and more different each day. I'm beginning to suspect they're fraternal. Sounds like yours might turn out to be identical.

I think we both need to get those DNA tests done!

My girls are identical and sometimes they look just alike and sometimes they look so different. They go through phases of looking alike and different. I will say though that their heads are shaped different and when they have hats on it is very hard for anybody to tell them apart.

Oh boy.. that's a tough one... The hair is REALLY throwing me off!! They look similar maybe not identical tho.... That's tough. You need a DNA test.. Can you post some more pics please?? I want to see more...

You might need a DNA test!

Mine are identical (shared a placenta) but I think they look so different! The 3+ pound weight difference doesn't help!

Hmmm, yeah their hair is throwing me off too. If I cover up their hair..then I think they look really similar and could definitely be identical. With their hair being so different though I think fraternal.

Sorry I am no help...but I do love this fraternal vs identical game.

This is a tough call! I think they look identical but like a pp, mine don't look anything alike. The hair in the 4 month picture is throwing me off as well.

I'm surprised your dr doesn't know better. With identicals it all depends on when the egg splits as to whether or not they'll have their own placentas or share one. If they have different blood types then they are definitely frats, but the only way to know is a DNA test, if they have the same blood type. Do your girls have the same blood type??

eta- I think they look identical (and they're beautiful, too, btw!)

Both girls are O+ blood type but so are my husband and I...oh well. I'm too cheap for a DNA test (I think they're expensive, aren't they?) so I guess I'll just wait and see.

Thanks for all the votes! I really have no idea myself!

My girls are identical but had very different weights at heights at birth so they looked nothing alike. As their weights got closer together, they got harder and harder to tell apart.

That's a toughy, they are adorable! They do look like they could be identical to me. My girls are identical but looked nothing alike at birth, as they get older they look more alike. Was your girl with the longer hair head down and the other girl breech during your pregnancy? Mine twin A was head down and has more hair (I was thinking maybe more blood flow to the head) and my twin B has a little less.

Yes - my girl with the long hair was head down throughout my entire pregnancy, the one with less hair was constantly spinning around. I'm going to try and take some more pictures this weekend, so maybe I'll repost next week; I'm going to try and get a more close up face picture. I weighed them both this morning and they both weigh the same now, so that's probably why it's tougher for me to tell them apart.

    Thanks everyone!

My boys looked SO VERY DIFFERENT at birth. We were sure they were fraternal. At 4 months, I started to question it (that was when they both started getting more hair at exactly the same time and it was the same shade -- my "A" had more hair than "B" at birth). We had them tested at 15 months and they are identical. We can tell them apart easily but other people struggle. The photos don't give me a clear shot of the hairline. If they both have a peak, then I'd say they're likely ID. If only one has it, they're fraternal (that's a genetic marker).

The tests run ~$160 and I justified it to DH that we'd only have to do it once to always know the answer.

You know - that's a big part of why I want to have it done...I'm constantly asked by other people!

Yes, and if you say you don't know, they look at you like you have three heads and some have the nerve to ask, "Well, didn't the doctor tell you how many placentas there were?"

I would vote for identical, based on their 4-month picture (they're so CUTE!) -- one has more hair, but their features look exactly the same to me. :)

THATS AMAZING... my twin A was head down almost the entire pregnacy and has longer hair than her sister who kept flipping around, and was finally born breech!

    What a coincidence!

My Baby A was mostly head down for several months towards the end, while Baby B flipped around a lot but was mostly breech (until the very end). But it's Baby B who has slightly more hair than A... So that theory doesn't work for us.

They look ID, but still could be frats. O+ doesn't help any at all does it? They are cute btw. My babies were 2 sacs one placenta, 0+ too and everyone swears they're ID. I get them mixed up if I'm looking at them fast some days if they're not "color coded" My two are 2 years old and they've gone through stages where they look alike and then don't.
For the sake of argument with the general public I say they're ID when asked.
PS. Baby A has always had more hair and she was also head down for most of the pregnancy.

That theory does work for us! I wonder if my baby A, Aiden will lose the hair he has now, making them look more alike...

That theory works for us, too! Van (baby A) was head down until the very end and has more hair than his brother... crazy....

And Kim K- speaking from experience- get them tested! It's the question they will get asked for their entire lives- my sister and I didn't know we were identical until we were 33 and having to tell people we didn't know and explain why was a hassle! Your girls will thank you for it!!!

I think they look ID. My boys are di/di and looked a bit different at birth- I thought they were frat but now they are looking more alike and Im starting to think ID. Might have to get the DNA test too. I'll try post their pics for opinions.

Wow .. yours IS a tough one ! The hair throws me off too. My boys hair has always grown exactly the same. They just have cowlicks on opposite sides of their heads.
BUT they do look more alike the older they get ...

    My vote is frat. :)

Now go get the test and let us know !! :D

When my twins were first born we couldnt tell if they were not identical or not, so we just had them order a genetic test in the hospital. Not sure what that would cost now that they are older, but might be worth it. Most insurances cover it if it is to rule out any issues they could encounter in the future. For example, if they are identical, it's good to know for blood purposes, etc.

They look id to me too! I can't wait to hear the results!! And your girls will definitely thank you for getting them tested! My twin and I hated telling people we didn't know.. no one ever understood..
