Anyone still using white noise?

Dh is convinced that we are going to have to send the boys off to college with white noise machines if we don't get them used to sleeping without it right now. We don't use soft music or ocean sounds... it's real white noise... a loud shhhhhhh sound. I don't see the harm in keeping it on, we have used it every single night and for every single nap since the boys were born. It drowns out the noises in the house and noises from each other. However, they are starting MDO in the fall and they won't have it there, so I'm wondering if maybe I should try to get them used to sleeping without it for naps. Did anyone else wean off of white noise?? Did you just turn it off one day? How did it work?

    Thanks,
    Carrie

We still use it; for us it is a fan and soft music. I just don't see any harm in it. It drowns out the passing cars, the barking dog, our 10 year old, and any other noise that may be going on in the house while they sleep. I do go in and turn off the music on my way to bed, but the fan usually stays on.

I still use one in each of their rooms for nap and bedtime. It's a waterfall sounds, so it's a continues ssssshhhh sounding, probably similar to yours.

I still use it - but I think its more for me than for them. I can't sleep without hearing it over the monitor now. :icon_biggrin:

We still use it for nighttime and weekend naps. At daycare I don't think they use it, although they might play soft music or something at naptime. I do worry a little about them being dependent on it (being a person who has multiple sleep issues myself), but I also like that it drowns out little sounds that DH and I make as we move around the house.

I use a small air purifier in their room at night. But its more so they cant hear whats going on outside their door .. i have 3 teenagers and things can still be pretty active until around 10 p.m. at night. :)

Yup, we still use it (well, we turn on fans, which make a soft humming sound).

My girls are still using theirs for naps and bedtime. We live on a corner and the girls' room is right on the corner of the house so they get cars passing all day ... plus they have a noisy older sister that can't find her quiet voice yet! I would love to have one in our room also, but I'm worried I won't hear the kids so we use our ceiling fan instead. I can't sleep without it so who am I to judge!

We still use it and it was very helpful when we stayed at a hotel. It helped drown out the noises in the hallways and streets. Plus it is a familiar sound to them which I think is soothing when they are in a new environment.

We still use it, and plan to for a while longer. My nieces used a machine until they entered elementary school!

We still use them... and actually, even before the babies were born, my DP needed one to fall asleep! So, we're big fans around here. I guess there really is NO age limit on them.

    I'm lurking in here shhh. . .

But I still use white noise now as an adult. We always have a fan (not a ceiling fan a floor fan) going, I can't sleep without it, when we go to hotels or to family or whatever I have to find some sort of white noise or I can't sleep

We still use it too, and DH and I have one in our bedroom also. My 2 dogs sleep in the bedroom with us and they are always making some noise which wakes me up. Having the white noise on low helps me sleep better.

Still use it for my older ds to drowned out household noise while he sleeps. It doesn't matter.... lots of adults need a fan, etc to sleep. I have one too in our bedroom for the girls.... but more for me!

My daughter is almost four and we still use hers for every nap (well, mostly "rest" time now) and bedtime. It drowns out the household noise and the noise from her room to the twins and vice versa. I would look at it this way...napping a MNO will be completely different than napping at home, white noise machine or not, it will be a different crib, different sounds, different person putting them down, other kids around, etc...Personally, I wouldn't sacrifice a good thing at home as far as naps/bedtime because they will still need to adjust to sleeping at MNO. As far as stopping the white noise at home (we actually use fans) I don't have any plans to stop in the foreseeable future. It works for us - so why stop? :) JMHO

I still use one for my little ones. My sister uses one for her 1st and 3rd grader and I still use one sometimes for myself. My babies sometimes take naps without one and do very well. Don't worry about an addiction - do what works!! If they have to go to college with one, there are worse things to worry about!! LOL

We use a humidifier (minus the water) in each room. We use it mostly so they can't hear us in the rest of the house. I often think about removing them; however, I'm not sure why. I think we'll keep them for awhile.

I was really scared to turn it off - actually I'm scared to do anything which could affect their sleep - but one day the babysitter just put them down for their nap without the noise and it was fine. A few days later I tried the same at night and they actually slept better! This was probably about a year ago now. It's not that everything is quiet around the house, but I so much prefer that they get used to our noises than that horrid heartbeat whooshing sound that was our white noise. If we'd have had something nice like a fan it might have been different!

We still use it. It's an alarm clock that has different "nature sounds" settings, and for the longest time, we only used the ocean setting. A few weeks ago, they discovered that it has different sounds, and now they will request which sound they want at night. So, that's shown me that they don't really need a certain sound. But the way our house is set up, their room is near the living room and kitchen, so I like that the white noise helps drown out the sounds of us doing dishes, watching TV, etc. I don't think it makes for a lifelong dependency or anything.
