anyone potty train one at a time?

I realize logistically, having two trained is better but right now our situation is that henry has a TON of interest, will now ask and is staying dry between potty breaks. Jacob is still admiring tile and likes to flush. So, daycare asked us to start working with Henry at home and they think transitioning to Pullups if we want, would be good. Henry wants to undress to go potty so diapers frustrate him.

Anyone potty train them one at a time?

Yes, I mostly did - though it was suc a long process that we did end up having an overlap. I started K off last January when she was 26 months and she was poop trained within a few days. Then, began the long struggle for pee training which we have finally reached the end of. I started with M about six months after K and she also recently just got completely trained (including at night - yay!)

If I had to do it over again, I guess I would probably have waited until my girls were three to start them - it would have saved a lot of headaches and gnashing of teeth. Until recently they would do great for a while, regress and have non-stop accidents, do great again, regress, etc. I spent a lot of time reminding them to go to the bathroom, asking them if they had to go, carrying around lots of extra clothes. Now that they finally "got it" I don't have to remind them or continually ask them if they have to go.

    Good luck!

Oh I would wait but Henry seems to think this is the coolest thing. We admire the tile with Jacob and will start with him when he's ready. That may be college time.

I did. My one DS pretty much PT'd himself just shy of 3 1/2. At the time he still had a speech delay and for MONTHS he would aksing us to flush. Little did we know he wanted to go potty. After a very stressful afternoon, we came home, I put him on the toilet and he went potty and never turned back. Even the next morning, he was eating breakfast, stopped and said "I have to poop". He ran upstairs and went!

My other DS took longer; a good 2+ months before he would even pee on the toilet. He would sit for maybe ten seconds and then tell us he was done. Getting him to poop was a battle and it did not help that he would only go every 3-4 days.

For me, it was much easier to train one at a time. They never really liked potty chairs so having them take turns on the toilet would have been hard. We have two bathrooms so now they are trained it's not a problem.

I did as well. I started them out at the same time, but Allison had no interest and Sarah did. Allison would cheer for Sarah whenever she got a sticker on her chart, but could have cared less about going to the potty. So, we just focused on Sarah until she was trained. It was about several months later before Allison would show interest. The funny thing is, Allison was the first to be completely potty trained even though she started so much later. Sarah was terrified to poop in the potty, that took almost 6 more months, so Allison was completely trained by the time Sarah got up enough nerve.

We did as well, Alice trained first, then a few months later Royce finally showed some interest and did it very quickly on his own timeline.

Thanks for the stories. It's good to see it happens more than I thought. Henry is still at it and we are very proud of him. We bought him "big boy diaper underwear" and he is excited.

    :woo: Henry!

I wound up having train one at a time. I did start with the intention of training them both at the same time. DD was ready and DS was not. He trained about 2-3 months after her.

I have one DD who is totally potty trained - even in big girl undies at night. Her twin, however, is totally not interested (at 3 years 3 months). She will occasionally ask for big girl undies but cannot consistently stay dry & gets upset when she has as accident, so I am not pushing it. I guess it will happen eventually - no one goes to college in diapers, right?!! :unknw:

Yes, I understand! I didn't mean that you should wait - just saying that for us starting at 26 months just meant a whole year of potty stress. I know that some kids are ready earlier than others...

I did. I tried to train them together, but Nolan had no interest. He was a few months behind Meghan.

I did too. I trained Emilie when she was 2y9m and didn't train Trevor until right around 3.

We did too. I started with them at the same time around 24 months, DS was very interested and quite good at it (I had a very gradual approach), DD was not interested at all. So I backed off for her and she cheered DS on. Then, about 6 months later, one weekend she asked for undies and it just clicked for her. She was more or less accident-free from that weekend on. At the same time, DS became even more motivated and I switched from the gradual approach to a more involved approach for him for a few days and now DS is fully trained too.
So, I would say go ahead and work with Henry if he interested and do not worry about his brother!

I didn't really intensively potty train either of them -- we did more of a child-led method (if you can call it a method in our case!). They both used the potty sporadically for many, many months (while still wearing diapers) before getting consistent about it. However, Amy wanted to switch to underwear several months before Sarah did -- Sarah was still worried about accidents. So there was about a 6-month gap between them, which was no problem at all.

They were both around 3 when we finally switched.
