Anyone out there with PCOS

I have been diagnosed with PCOS and I used a combination of Metformin and Clomid to get pregnant this time around. This is my third pregnancy using the Metformin, but we don't have any living children as of yet. One pregnancy ended in miscarriage (blighted ovum at about 8 weeks) and my second ended in a stillbirth (32 weeks). There are mixed reviews out there about whether or not to continue using Metformin after the first trimester but my doctors have not encouraged me to discontinue use this time around. Use during the first 12-13 weeks in a person with PCOS is supposed to decrease the chance of miscarriage. Well, I am definitely out of the woods for a miscarriage, but since my daughter's autopsy didn't explain what went wrong, I don't want to take any meds I don't need.

Is anyone out there with PCOS still taking this medication, even into their second and third trimesters? If not, were you weaned off or did your doctor have you stop cold turkey?

    Thanks for the advice.

    Hello,
I have PCOS and I too took Metformin and clomid to get pregnant. My doctor told me that I needed to get off Metformin at 12 weeks. My sister-in-law also has PCOS and went through the same process, she too got off at 12 weeks she just delivered her first about 2 month ago. We both went off cold turkey. I'm not sure if that helps at all but just thought I would give you some additional PCOS stories. I will say some prayers for you to have a healthy and easy pregnancy!

They diagnosed me shortly before I got pregnant with PCOS- and put me on Glumetza- a new form of glucophage- and had me continue it up to 15 weeks. I was taking 3 at one time a day, or 1500 mg, and they stopped me cold turkey too.

I have PCOS, and was taking metformin (1500 mg)and used injects/IUI to get pregnant. My RE had me stop the met at 10 weeks. She said I didn't have to taper off. I was a little concerned at first, but I stopped and everything has been fine.

I am still on Met, my appointment this last week they said nothing about stopping it or the asprin I am on.
With an extremely horrible family history of diabetes I think they may keep me on it to keep it ok. I have always been a bit boarderline on my levels so that may be it.

I have PCOS and went through IVF to get pregnant. I was on Fortamet (time-released version) until 22wks when I was admitted to the hospital for a short cervix. My RE wanted me to stay on it through out the pregnancy and my OB agreed. I went off in the hospital because the peri said I didn't need it anymore. But one of my nurses took it through out her first pregnancy (healthy baby) and never went off. She's pregnant again and plans to take it for the whole pregnancy again.

    HTH!

Hi-I also have PCOS. I was taking 2000mg of it daily and once I hit 8 weeks-the RE took me off it cold turkey. I just gave birth last week to two healthy twin boys! Good luck to you! :D

I have both PCOS and prediabetes and was on Metformin until 15w. At that point, my sugar levels were fine, so I was taken off by my OB and regular endo. Also cold turkey and all seems fine. I'll get my GD test in another 4 weeks, so we'll see how my sugar levels really are then.

Well I stayed on it till around 24 weeks when I weaned myself off. My Dr.s couldn't decide (one was for staying on, the other against)

I wish now I would have stayed on, but only for purposes of my hormones going haywire after giving birth. I also had 3 m/c's prior to the twins so can totally understand you not wanting to take anything you don't have to. That's precisely why I stopped.

After they were born though, my body went bonkers and I gained so much weight immediately AFTER they were born, and almost 10 months later am STILL trying to lose it.... not to mention I got all the PCOS symptoms back, tenfold, afterwards.

If nothing else, make sure you start it again as soon as they are born. I never had to many of the 'classic' symptoms before getting pregnant, I just never ovulated. Afterwards though, the weight gain, hair, moodiness, all of them I got.

    Good luck to you.
