I am currently 25w4d on Lovenox for MTHFR. My perinatologist has said that I will not need to take it at all post-partum. I was under the impression post-partum is the most hypercoagulant time and I should be on Lovenox for 2-6 weeks. What are your doctors telling you?

    Thanks so much.

I don't know what MTHFR is...

I look heparin injections for about a month while I was on strict hospital bedrest. I was able to stop getting the shots as soon as I delivered.

I'm on Lovenox (and have been since the beginning of my preg.) also for MTHFR. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten far enough to ask my OB/high risk dr's about my post-partum regime. Next time I'm in, I will ask about this.

I am curious though, my twin girls are both breech and it looks like they will require a c-sect. My OB has said that I will have to be completely knocked out for the CS b/c the anestesiologist (sp?) will not administer a spinal on someone taking Lovenox. Have you heard anything about this?

    Thanks!

I'm not sure about that. I think it may depend on the anesthesiologist. I know there are risks with Lovenox and epidural. What most people do to avoid situations like that is switch to Heparin before they deliver, or say towards the end of the pregnancy and then begin Lovenox post-partum for a few weeks. Heparin does not have the risks associated with epidurals that Lovenox does. Or at least this is what I understand to be the case. If your doctor doesn't know you could ask to have an anesthesiologist consult and see what they say. Hope this helps.

Hi girls! I am only heterozygous for MTHFR so I'm only on Foltx and Baby asprin. But I have often wondered whether or not treatment should be continued after delivery, especially after c-sections. I have also heard that if you are homozygous then you may need asprin for life. Am I wrong?

Hi,I'm new to this board. I also have MTHFR and am currently on 30mg of Lovenox and baby aspirin. I am 15 weeks pregnant with twins and was also on it with my previous singleton pregnancy. I was told by my OB and my hemotologist that the 6 weeks post partum were the most important time to be using it. During my last pregnancy my OB wanted me to stop taking it at 38 weeks so I would be able to get an epidural. I really wanted one! However, my water broke at 37 weeks, 2 hours after I gave myself a shot. The anestesiologist (sp?) said the lovenox had to be out of my system 24 hours before I could get the epidural. Luckily I was able to beat the clock and got one. If I would have needed an emergency C-section before that, I would have been put under. My OB thinks that this time she will switch me to a lower molecular weight Heprin shot, twice a day, when I reach 34-35 weeks. I guess there is a way to reverse the effects of Heprin, but not Lovenox.
    Good luck!

We did IVF and I started heparin the day of my transfer. It was determined that I had a clotting factor due to some blood work. I stayed on heparin throughout the pregnancy. I had to stop it 24-36 hours before my c-section. I was never put back on it. The Peri, not my RE, did do bloodwork after delivery and said it was not necessary to continue.

My dr. tried to switch me to Heparin but I had a bad reaction to it. The good news is, I just found out (about an hour ago) that both of my babies turned and are now vertex. If they stay that way (I'm almost 29 weeks) at least I could try for a natural delivery.

I'm glad to know that I need to ask about post-natal Lovenox.

Tracey - What you have been advised is what I generally read and thought to be true. I am going to push my perinatologist to allow me to continue Lovenox for at least a couple of weeks post-partum.

Nini - My understanding is that you should be on a Foltx (or something similar) and a baby aspirin for life. If you are homozygous or compound heterozygous (this is what I am) then you should take two Foltx (one for each mutation) and a baby aspirin for life.

As for my delivery, it's beginning to look like I will have a c-section due to growth restriction/blood flow issues with Baby A. It could very easily be an emergency c-section though. I guess that's another question for me to ask the peri. I really don't want to be put under.
