I was just wondering if any of you have the Mirena IUD? I had thought about getting just a regular IUD without any hormones but I have been told it can make periods worse and cramps worse. NO THANKS!!! I was just wanting to do something without hormones and my doc said while this one does have hormones it's mostly local and not in the blood stream. Anyway just wondering if those who have it like it? Have you had any problems with it?

    Thanks for any input.

    Hi,

i had the Mirena in for exactly 6 weeks -- I breastfeed and it affected my milk supply and made me super depressed - so I had it removed ASAP> Within 48 hours I felt soooo much better and have no had depression since. (I'm a stressed out, overtired mom of twins, but I'm not really depressed - :)

I have fibroid tumors so I think the progesterone was getting into my bloodstream via those, so your experience may be different -- but I'd do some searches re: the Mirena. I found a few forums where women had similar bad experiences. Of course, my gyno didn't know about any of these symptoms.. so I'm glad I did my own research.

Good luck and if you find a good alternative (besides the pill) let me know, I'm interested.

I've had mine since February of this year and absolutely no problems. I did have on and off spotting for several weeks to months, very minor, which is completely normal. I wanted something long lasting, safe (we're done) and low maintenance. Periods are very easy right now, very short and minimal bleeding. No other side effects. It does have hormones, but very low (read more on their website). I love it and many people I know love theirs too. Would recommend it (though check whether your insurance pays for it ... we had to pay out of pocket, and it's not cheap but it will last 5 years so per year it's not bad).

I have had the Mirena since January... I am still breastfeeding and I have had no problems... I just got my first period since the IUD (I haven't had one since October) and it is very light, no cramps and I am almost done after three days... I highly recommend it.

I am actually going for a consult with the Dr. on Tues. I was going to get a tubal but had bad periods w/o birth control (hormones). My SIL just got it last week, so she doesn't have much of an opinion yet. She had a tubal but was having heavy, painful periods, so her Dr. recommended it. Her Dr. has one and loves it. Only bad thing she has had to say is that her husband says he can feel it! :shok:

I've had the Mirena since November and LOVE it. Practically no periods, never any cramping, etc. I recommend it

I have the copper w/o the hormones and have REALLY long and sometimes very heavy and very painful periods. I like that I don't have to think about anything though.....

I thought I couldn't manage anymore hormones at the time I got it, but your comments from your doc are interesting to me!
