Anyone have a vaginal birth with one breech baby?

My dr. said that he will do a vag birth for me even though Baby B is breech. This is my 3rd time giving birth and my other children were large (10lbs) so he said that I should be able to get the head out. The babies are less then a pound apart right now.

Anyone go through this? If you did, what are the pros and cons? I would like to avoid a section if it's not medically necessary. Or does anyone have any tips on spinning a breech baby at this point??

    Thanks

I didn't do this...but I came close... at 34 weeks my baby A, who had been vertex, went transverse...but otherwise I would have gone for it...my baby B was sort of somewhere between breech and transverse. Two things to remember...1. it's always possible that baby B will turn on his own...2. this type of breech birth is very different from a singleton breech birth...everything is opened up and as long as the doc can reach his hand up there fast enough it's pretty simple to pull the baby out... the key is to not wait too long or the cervix can close up a bit...

What I did was to talk to all of my possible doctors...my practice had four docs who delivered... I got all of their opinions. 3 out 4 four were very comfortable with either turning baby B or doing a breech extraction...the other wasn't. Well, I was nervous about getting that other doc...but I figured the odds were with me on getting someone who was good at breech extraction. If you know for sure you will have this doctor (he isn't scheduled for vacation or anything) and you know that he is 100% comfortable and Experienced doing these procedures then I would go for it. You can't ask a doc to do something that they are not comfortable or experienced doing.... but if your doctor is fairly confident (and you seem like a really good candidate having delivered such a large first baby) then I would go for it. I too was a good candidate since my first was 8lbs1oz.... but alas my baby A decided that she didn't want to go to all that trouble...

i delivered breech and while my delivery of baby B was incredibly dangerous, i would still be 100% comfortable making the same decision again. In my case, my uterus clamped down in the middle and wouldn't let go of anthony's head so my doc couldn't get him out fast enough. they almost did an emergency section, but at the last moment with forceps they got him out. he wasn't breathing and had to be resucitated but he still came home with me and did really well. My doctor said he's only seen about 20 ctx like the one i had in all his years, so like i said, i would still feel confident in supporting a mom & her doctor's decision to deliver twin B breech if dr said it was safe. Good luck!

I've delivered one vertex and one breech baby vaginally. My doctor and the hospital I delivered (one of the largest and best in the Midwest) are completely for that. I delivered a 9lbs+ singleton before, and even though my twins were big too, they weren't that big. They were always 1 oz apart (up to 2lbs is fine said my doc). I pushed 5 times for my girl (2 1/2 hours for my first), so that went very quick, they checked the position of baby B (sometimes they flip), but still breech, reached in (epidural recommended and required by my hospital), pulled the legs, and he was born 4 minutes later (it's done pretty quickly, I only had to push once for his head). He scored 5 and 9 Apgar because he was in a little distress and not breathing at first. He was fine a few minutes later (and got the 9). I would do it again, in a heart beat. It's quick and safe (if you have the right doctor and the right hospital) and you don't have to do major surgery. My doc said that many residents aren't even trained to do breech extractions anymore, but luckily they still do here in Chicago.

Yep. My singleton was almost 9lbs. and my vertex/breech twins were 8lbs. each. It was waaaaaay easier than a having major abdominal surgery--and I didn't even have any pain meds. The biggest factor in a breech birth is the skill of the care provider. If your doc has experience and good outcomes, I say "go for it".

    Good luck.

Thanks for all the replys!! My DR. is a MFM and has had LOTS of experience with delivering breech and the other Dr. in our hospital is the same. I will also be delivering in a hospital with a level 3 NICU so I feel pretty comfortable!

I think I am going to try!! (but I am still going to hope that he flips before then - fingers crossed)
