Our little guy has acid reflux and the Zantac was not totally working so the pedi suggested the cereal. We have been using the Gerber rice cereal with the Neosure and having difficulties finding the right nipple. They said to cut a x in the nipple. I tried that in our Dr Brown size 1 since we still need the size 2s for dd but most of the time the flow is too fast and the hole seem to get larger on their own even if I make them very small. Now we are trying the Y cut but I am not sure those are good either. I feel like it is too slow and he is not eating well at all(but he is not spitting up[IMG]). We have tried anywhere from 1.5-3 teaspoons of cereal for a 3oz bottle and it seems to make no difference. I know there are other threads about the cereal in the bottle and what nipple but it does not say if Neosure was used or not and that formula tends to be a little thicker than others. What nipples/bottles are you using? Any tips or suggestions?

My little guys both have reflux since we brought them home from the NICU. It just got progressively worse when they started eating more and more. So we tried mixing the rice cereal with the Neosure powder and using the Playtex drop ins and cutting the nipple. Argh how frustrating first it wouldnt come out then it was too much so I gave up. But we were still having issues. Then I switched to the Dr Browns bottles totally to see if that would do the trick and it helped but we were still arching and screaming some of the time. Then I decided to do the Y cut nipple and I could see the cereal in the nipple and my one boy was having a hard time eating and it seemed to take forever and then he would fall asleep and he needed to eat since he was a preemie. But if I mixed the cereal with the ready to use Neosure it worked much better I guess due to the thickness it kept the cereal particles suspended and broken up instead of the more liquidy powder that seemed to always clog at the nipple. So for us the ready to use was worth the price just to get the cereal down and not have a frustrated baby and parent.

I just threw my Zantac away for my daughter because she vomited it up every time I gave it to her. In fact, I use more than 1 tblsp. of cereal per 2 oz. I use 3 oz of cereal (dry) per 4 oz of breast milk (or used to be Neosure..which they don't like the taste of anymore). My babies have difficulties sucking and have to have PT for it. However, with the thicker cereal, we have NO reflux issues at all!!! None! I use the Playtex drop ins and make a single slit. If you hold the nipple with the slit horizontal, the flow is much slower than if you hold it vertical. Mine get too tired when sucking so I have to turn it. We started cutting on size 2 nipples. My ped said it was fine to have thicker cereal as long as there were lesser reflux problems and they were gaining weight. They have never looked better.

When mine were on formula we used Enfamil Enfacare, which is the Enfamil preemie formula like Neosure. We also thickened the bottles with rice cereal. I used fast flow nipples and never had a problem with it being too thick. For 5-6oz. of formula I would add 4 tsp. of rice cereal (for 5 oz. for the 6 oz. bedtime I would add 5 tsp. of cereal).
