anyone ever done sperm spinning for gender of choice

Discussion in 'The First Year' started by jessica 2onway, Feb 20, 2007.

Just wondering what it's all about, I have 3 boys and would love a little girl. Someone told me I should consider having DH sperm spin so my chances of having a girl go way up. Has anyone done this ? If so how much does it cost ? What does it involve ? I've heard a little about this, but I don't think it's all that common. Any response would be great. thanks. [IMG]

I do not agree with gender selection, which is essentially what you are talking about. I obviously haven't researched the costs but I'm sure it would involve IVF w/PGD which is VERY expensive. I'm thinking somewhere in the neighborhood of $15k-$20k+?

Call your doctor. I'm sure they would be able to help you or look online somewhere. [IMG]

  4. Thanks for your response, I didn't think IVF was necessary, as I would not go through all that trouble to have a child when I'm plenty fertile. Conceived twins twice without fertility aids. I guess I'll just take what the lord gives me, you get what you need right. [IMG]I guess I didn't think it was so involved. I just really want a daughter, hopefully someday.

I hear you on wanting a daughter! I have 3 boys too! We are going to TRY to sway our odds to get a girl and we will be done! I know I'm not in control of the situation but I'm hoping we can somehow convince God to give us ONE girl! [IMG]

My cousin is doing this. She is going somewhere in L.A., I think through UCLA, and is part of a study. I don't even want to know how much it is. Or go online and search under UCLA. It may be more reasonable since it is part of a study. Here is an interesting article:

Basically, she has been on these shots for several weeks. They harvested about 20 eggs, spun the sperm and fertilized the eggs. I think about 15 or so were viable and of those, all but one were female. And they did genetic testing on each and every fertilized egg. I know there is a lot of opinions out there on this - but it's your body, your family and your decision. I will say this - her biggest worry is what to do with the remaining fertilized eggs. She has had one inserted and unfortunately, she miscarried after about 6 weeks. Another one is going to be inserted any day now. But do think about the remaining eggs - that might be something you don't think about initially. If you don't plan on having more, do you donate them? Research? A lot to think about - but it is amazing what science has accomplished, regardless of what you feel about the procedure. Good luck with whatever you choose!

There are other methods to do this besides IVF with PGD, ranging in cost from like $2000 to $5000 (IVF with PGD would obviously be costlier). I used to have a good website link about it saved, but now it says not found. Darn, it was for a doctor very close to my house!

I'm not sure how I feel on the whole subject. I would absolutely love to have a little boy if we ever get PG again, but not sure if I would do it or not.

The less costlier methods do involve some sort of spinning of sperm to sort out mostly male or female sperm. They are not 100% accurate methods.

I also have a book about this, talks mostly about the timing of things to give you better boy or girl chances.

One member of this board did something like vinegar washings or something... I don't really remember, I just know I found it remarkable that there was something like that.
She is now very pregnant with a little girl (after twin boys), so there are "home remedies" that can increase your chances for a girl. Just check it out online!

p/s: as a boy girl twin I do not believe in that stuff about one day is more prone to be a girl and one to be a boy... unless we were conceived on different days!!!

I would absolutely LOVE to have a son some day, but I won't be doing the gender selection. It is too expensive and I personally don't agree with it unless it is being done because of a genetic problem associated with only one specific gender. I did find a site a while back that talks about pretty much every method you can think of to try for one gender or the other. It was called ingender. Good luck! [IMG]

Hmm... interesting, I have never heard of it until now... I am wanting a girl this time around... if I get another boy, maybe I can look into this?

I have no ethical problem with gender selection before conception... BUT I look at it like this: The BEST, FASTEST, SMARTEST spermies are the ones to get to the egg first (in theory) so I wouldn't want to mess around with that!!! Just a new prespective! GL with your decision

If you want to sway the odds with out medical intervetion there things you can do. I personal think timming is the key. A female sperm is fatter and slower and live longer while a male sperm is skinny and fast and die sooner. If you have a cut off date of 2-3 days before ovulate then you'll have more female around for the egg then male sperm. Sometimes a womans egg like one sprem better then the other so you can change your diet. If you eat more dairy and more poltery you are more likely to have a girl. You can also change you Ph balance with a vinegar washing. There are lots of things that can be done and yes they do work.

When we deceided to try I did lots of research on what I could do to up my chances in getting pregnant. I chose to chart by taking my temp so I knew when I would be ovulating. I made sure to have sex the whole week before I ovulated so there would be LOTS of little sperms to get the egg. I didn't know at that time I was uping my chances for a girl and that was the month I got pregnant with the girls. I do truely beleive that timming is everything. Good luck I hope you get the girl you want.
