Anyone else's 16 month-olds sleeping a ton?

I'm just a little confused at what the babies are doing now, so I thought I'd check in to see if anyone else's kids are sleeping a ton lately. I know, I know---why in the world am I complaining about too much sleep! Well, I'm not complaining--I just wanted to see if it's normal! The other day they had their normal nap--around 2 hours long, but by 5 pm they were totally melting down. We had plans to go to dinner with another family and so I thought I'd just lay them down for a catnap to see if 30 minutes would perk them back up. I didn't have the heart to wake them up, so we just stayed home. At 9:00 they woke up, ate some dinner, and fell back asleep for the rest of the night. They woke up at 6:30 the next morning. Last night they went to bed at 6:30 pm--totally exhausted. They woke up this morning at 7am, napped for 2 hours in the afternoon and were in bed again tonight by 6:15. I just can't keep them up! Does this sound normal to you? How many hours total do your kids sleep? Thanks!

Hey! It's good to see you here!

Hmm, I can't tell from your post how many hours they're sleeping total every day....maybe they're just having an "off" week?

Mine sleep from 9:30pm to 9:30am every night, and nap for a solid 2.5 hours, from 2pm to 4:30pm. Sometimes, if they've gotten up at 9am, they'll nap 'til 5pm. Either way, it's a fairly consistent 14.5 hours total, which I think is average at 15 months? If they get less sleep, they're definitely cranky...

Okay, as much as I missed you and as thrilled as I am to see you back, I have to say if these are the "issues" you'll be bringing up in the board, then feel free to take another hiatus :p. Seriously, I have no idea what those little ones of yours are up to but mine are definitely going in the opposite direction. They nap for about 1 hour in the morning then another 1.5 in the afternoon. But they do still sleep from 7 to 7. Hey, if you don't believe me when I say I missed you, read this.

Don't send me away! The reason I ask is that mine are generally rotten sleepers, so this whole 14 hours a day thing has thrown me for a loop! They are awful nappers and usually wake up at 5:45 in the morning, so this is just plain weird. But from what Becca said, maybe this is NORMAL!?? Oh man, I have seriously missed out. I will now shut my trap and enjoy this new-found sleeping thing. Geez, it only took 16 months....

mine have gone on sleeping kicks but they don't last more than 2 days--i always say they must be growing or something....it's definitely nice when they do it!

i agree it's so good to see you again, i also posted looking for you a while back! (i think in PC)

Thanks. That means a lot to me! It's so nice to be back. I really miss you all. And thanks for bursting my bubble about the whole sleeping thing. I'm sure tomorrow they'll be back to their non-sleeping selves. Bummer....

From 16 months through 3 years, 2 months--when they stopped napping, mine slept from 12-13 hour at night, and tool a 2-4 hour nap each day. It was usually about 3 1/2 hours. Are they waking from their nap on their own, or are you waking them? If you are waking them, I would try giving them a bit more nap. They could also be going through a growth sprut, and temporarily need the extra sleep.

At 16 months my two were still taking two 2 hour naps and sleeping 12 hours at night. We went down to one nap at 17 months. I don't see anything wrong with sleeping. :)

    Reyna,

It's great to see you again! I'm no expert, but I think changes in sleep are typical during growth spurts. My girls have been sleeping an extra 1/2 hour or hour a day over the past week and I think it's because they're growing. They're also eating more than normal. Maybe this is what's up with your kiddos?

    Either way - welcome back...

Mine took a 4.5 hour nap the other day... at the sitters. GRR! Wish it was on my time. LOL... I wonder if it is a growth spurt or maybe they are playing harder?

Mine always pull a stunt like that on days that I have to take them somewhere, and I end up having to wake them up! Oh the irony.

Our sleep has been really crazy lately.

If I had to basically describe it, mine sleep 6pm-6:30am (usually.... sometimes 5:45, sometimes 6:45). They also nap for about 45-60 minutes twice per day. Grand total: About 14-15 hours.

Glad to hear you are enjoying the bliss of sleeping toddlers!
