so i had heard how fabulous mesh feeders were since the beebs were newborns, and couldn't wait for them to use 'em....tried at 6 months when we first introduced solids, and no go, so i figured, ok, too young, need to be into finger foods

well, we're doing all kinds of finger foods now (even peas, if you're wondering about my pp, and no incidents!), and they STILL just chew on the handles and then chuck them over the side of the chair. i think i missed my window, but every time i tried it, it was a no-go

and here's something else...how on EARTH do you get the mesh clean? the bits of banana or whatever seem to stay in forever, gross!!!

just wondering if i'm the only mesh feeder flunkee around here

mine love them with frozen banana in them...they're teething right now. They do chew on the handles a lot.

I would just keep trying, they may just not be into them. Bananas are the hardest thing to get out of them, and I would always immediately put them in a bowl of hot water to soak before even attempting to clean them!

oh i am a mesh feeder flunkie too. i gave mine a banana in it also well it seemed to be going good DS would taste it once i showed him how and made funny faces well then he just tossed it over the side of the chair ok so that was a total waste. now onto DD she tried it also with me showing her which side to chew on and she did chew it for a whole minute then started to bite the bottom also then back to the banana so i said ok thats good then she started to bang it on the side of her high chair so i took it away wiped her hands and threw the things out. 5 minutes later DH says whats all over her face and i look and she had dried banana specks all over her face and hair i didn't see it when it was wet lol and i looked at her chair and their was dried bananas there too. i haven't used them since.

Mesh feeders...another product I bought that went straight to the trash. Bananas were the first thing I tried and even after 2 cycles in the dishwasher, there was still banana in them. Ick. Mine had no interest in them except to see how far they could throw them.

I never put banana in them because it was a b*tch to clean. I actually only used them with hard things like apples, pears, biter biscuits. Immediately when they were done, I'd rinse them out (inside out) and then I put them in my munchkin basket for the top shelf of my dishwasher. I never had a problem doing that.

My girls only kind of used them.. they'd chew on the handles or suck on the mesh, but I never really used it for more than a distraction (like if I was cooking dinner, they'd be in high chairs with the mesh feeders). So I never used it for actual snack or meal times when they might really be hungry. Hope that makes sense. GL!

We've been using mesh feeders for several months now. It seems that some days they are really into them and other days they throw them over the side of their high chairs. I have put apples, pears, mangos, bananas, and grapes in them. Frozen grapes have been popular for teething.

I notice now that they have teeth, they have been biting down on them and pulling on the mesh. I suspect that soon one day they will rip them with their teeth and that will be the end of it!

They are a pain in the butt to clean. I usually give them a rinse right away and then run them through the dishwasher (in my nipple/bottle ring basket). If they still have gunk in them, which they usually do, I give them a scrub by hand.

A bit of work, but it's worth it for the quiet time when they are busy with them and for the peace of mind that they won't choke.

I did banana first and quickly learned it was a pain to clean out. So never again. But I do put apples, pears, plums, apricots and that sort of stuff in them and my kids love them. They suck the juice out of the fruit...honeydo and cataloupe were also popular. They have been great for teething. Once they are done with them we take them apart, put them inside out, rinse them and put them in the top rack of the dishwasher in the basket with the nipples and such.

I used mine for everything, except bananas. Things that soft just squish up and make a mess. It's almost like just scooping baby food in there and that's not going to work very well. :) The feeders were excellent for giving the kids a snack while I was cooking or when we were eating at a restaurant. I had two for the girls and four for Dax and they got tons of use. At your kids age they can still use the mesh feeder but you might as well just focus on finger foods since they don't get it. We used the same cleaning method as the pp. Good luck!

I'm a mesh feeder flunkie too. They never figured out what it was, chewed on handle then chucked it over the side, just like you said. I found them very hard to clean as well. Gave up almost immediately and now I use it as a distraction toy when I change their diapers and they keep wanting to roll over.

I tried one with my son. I think I may have missed the window too. Personally I think it was a waste. He did eat some fruit in it. I think maybe I even tried them with the twins too. I can't remember.

We used the Playtex Ventair and I think we were slow forever. Their nipples were way to fast. Although I think maybe after using the nipples so much they were widened by the sucking, so they probably were faster even though they were supposed to be slow. :p
