Anyone else love feeding them real food?

I just wanted to share that I'm having so much fun making my baby food and feeding it to them! I really thought I was going to be a little bit sad when they started solids because I love BFing and time consuming since I already felt so busy, but I feel really good about it! So far we've only had the cereals (from a box...doctors orders for iron...but we had an intolerance to the oatmeal so we're sticking to rice!), butternut squash, sweet potatoes, and avocado, and I just made a yummy batch of apple sauce to freeze for next week.

It's so fun to watch their little faces as they try new things. So far, I think mine tolerate the rice cereal because they know the good stuff is coming after. They make funny faces with the cereal, but as soon as they get a whiff of the sweet potato or whatever veggie/fruit of the week, they open their little mouths so wide! DD makes little monkey ooo-oooh noises while she's waiting for her turn. I just love the big goofy open-mouthed grins with food rolling around on their tongues! So cute

So there's no real reason for this post except to see how the rest of you are doing with solids (I know a bunch of us started around the same time) and to let those of you who haven't started know that it's a treat to come! I thought it would be a lot of extra work, but so far I like how it changes up the day for us.

I'm glad you like it. I don't. It is definitely a laziness factor for me. I do make my own food, but feeding is just something else to keep me busy! ENjoy it! :) We tried to start a 2nd meal but then Evan got sick with a cold and now an ear infection so he isn't eating much nowdays. :(

I do and I don´t enjoy it. As one PP said, it can be a chore! DS is easy to feed as he eats anything I give him and quickly. DD usually eats quite well but takes an AGE and also one spoonful of food can come back out several times. Its like she forgets how to swallow her puree! Patience is a virtue!

Mine are at that age when they want to see what they´re eating so I let DS put his hand in his food and feel it. I sometimes put a spoonful on his tray so he can touch it. Its either do that or have a tug of war over with the bowl!! I try to take a relaxed attitude at mealtimes otherwise I´d probably go crazy! LOL!

I love giving them food to try like if Im eating a plum or a piece of bread, I´ll let them suck on it and try it. Their expressions are cute to watch! I havent done finger foods yet (pedi said not to till they´re 1 yr old) and Im looking forward to doing it!

    Keep on enjoying solids! :winking:

I love feeding them solids too. It is a chore sometimes but they seem so much more excited to eat "real" food instead of a bottle. James LOVES yogurt and gets really excited when he sees that is what they are getting. They both love most fruits, but pineapple so far seems to be their favorite. Jack is the more adventurous eater. He had his first taste of garlic bread this past weekend and was pretty excited by it. He tried a little bit of tomato and sucked on a pepper from the salad at Olive Garden and was happy as could be. They can both feed themselves cheerios and puffs and I think next we will be trying shredded cheese. They even take their bottles better now, I think because they know that they will get the food too.

I loved it at first... now that I actually have to think of what to give them for meals, instead of just opening a jar (homemade or not), COOK it (I hate cooking) and see DS not eat half of it, I'm not enjoying it half as much, lol.

I don't really enjoy it, except when they make a new milestone. I spend half my time trying to get Mark to stop sucking his thumb and pulling his bib off. Eli is a bib sucker, and he likes to grab the spoon, which also drives me crazy.

Then there is the constipation--I've got to keep them away from rice and bananas. My Mom got them a bunch cereals, and not I feel like all of the rice cereal is going to waste. I'm hoping once they start drinking more water they will be able to handle rice and bananas. I suppose I can just get a bunch of pureed prunes and always feed them bananas and rice with prunes, which seems to offset the problem.

The last couple days I've been feeding them those puffs, and they are starting to get the idea of finger foods.

I have cooked them a few meals, but I'm under too much stress to cook everyday. I pureed sweet potato and spinach with potato. I highly recommend the pureed spinach--they boys seem to like it, especially when I mixed in apples or pears LOL!

I'm having fun with solids too. Both of my girls make the monkey noises while waiting for the spoon - its pretty funny. Sounds like we are at the zoo. So far they like sweet potato, avacado, and carrots if mixed with oatmeal or rice cereal. Next we will either do brown rice cereal, peas, or apples....can't decide yet! They make quite a mess - thumbs in the mouth, bib all over the place, and when they smile at me anything that is still in their mouth just pours right out!

    I LOVE IT too!!

However, I have only made one "big" batch. Lately, I've been making to order. I have the little baby food
maker thing, and I just steam the vegetable we are on that morning and puree them and use that for the day's feeding.
We are only on ONE solid a day. Sometimes with cereal, sometimes plain.

I'm taking it very slow. Right now we are on peas and tomorrow we start zucchini.

I'm still confused about the fruits. A few lists say peaches are fine for 7 months, but I also heard they were
highly allergenic (or at least on the list).

So it is FUN and I LOVE it, but I also get confused when deciding what to make next.

Oh, I'll be in trouble when meats & dairy comes. I can't even decide or figure out how to do the fruits and vegetables.

keep posting on any ideas for solids. I love it!

I have a picky eater. Rose will typically eat what I give her [even with a sour looking face]. Alyssa on the other hand.. Whatever I give her she gets a sour face and looks at me like "what the heck are you trying to feed me, mama!?" It could be the sweetest of sweets and she'd do the same thing and spit at least half of what I gave her out and then a trail of saliva follows suit. Who knows, it might be different went they're a little older. Rose might become the picky eater and Alyssa might like everything.

So far, we stick to oatmeal [rice makes them constipated] on a normal basis and I try a few things here and there just to introduce tastes and textures. I feel neutral about it.. don't LOVE it and I don't HATE it. It's fun, yet a little frustrating at times when they don't cooperate.

Oooh, I'll try that when we start mixing things. I can't wait to try spinach! I may have posted too soon, though. It may get much harder once I'm trying to get them to eat mixes of things. Right now they sure seem to enjoy eating one thing at a time, though! Are yours eating so much now that you have to make it almost daily? I've been trying to stay one food ahead so far, freezing them in my little BM storage tubes (since bottle feedinf EBM didn't go so well at least they'll get some use!), and I make big batches when I have a little time so all I have to do is thaw them.

Me, too!! At least we can come here for moral support.

So far for us it's been easy because we're just giving the pure fruit or vegetable - no mixing yet. Bake or boil the food and toss it in the food processor! I add EBM if it's thick. I go on wholesomebabyfood.com to see how to cook/freeze/whatever, and they have some good recipes for when we finally get through tasting and can start mixing!

i love making my own baby food! i just throw a huge amount of sweetpotatoes or squash/apples/pears into the slow cooker and leave it all day to cook-usually takes only a half a day:) by the end of the day i throw it all in a blender and puree it into the trays:) i make approx a week or 2 for both girls:) I just tried broccoli, avacdo; peas, paypapya- and the usually ones-i have a bag of cauliflower and mix veggies to try-and i have only done the chicken/potatoes combo-for now i just buy the meat jars until i can get some good meat recipes!

Ah, it all depends on the day and the week and everyones mood. DD is going through a stage of blowing raspberries when she gets a mouthful and spraying her food everywhere. She thinks this is hilarious. DS is like a little bird though, and opens his mouth up dutifully for everything that goes in.

I make a lot of my own baby food, but on Sunday I managed to get a little over zealous and killed my food processer. Then, for the first time ever, both babies screwed their noses up at the food and sealed their little lips shut and refused to eat anything - this, after spending a good couple hours chopping, cooking, pureeing and dividing into containers. I did go out today and buy a new food processer though, so I must be more resiliant than I think. That, or plain stupid.

I do like solids, but I'll be glad when they're eating finger food and are a little more independent. I feel like we're tied to the high chairs at the moment.
