My DD has been biting her nails for a while now. I believe it started not long after I took the pacifer away, which was when she turned 2. I thought maybe she was just trying to replace her old habit with a new one. I tried not to make a big deal about it because I figured it was a phase, but she will be 3 in sept. Our Dr. didn't act concerned and just told me to try to keep her hands busy, but that just doesn't work. He also said I could try the bitter stuff you can put on your nails that tastes really bad. I haven't tried that yet. Any one else have this problem? Any suggestions?

Irelynd is a nail bitter, so is her daddy. After we got rid of their pacifiers thats when she started biting her nails. For awhile there she was biting them so much they where starting to bleed so I bought that "no bite" nail stuff from walmart. I tried it myself just out of curiosity and to see if how bad it was going to be for her and that stuff is AWFUL! It did the trick and when she would go bite her nails she would get a taste, cry and not do it again. The problem was if she was to lick her fingers say she got yogurt on them she would get a taste of that awful stuff again and it made me feel bad. I only used it 3 times I think before she stopped biting them until they bled. She still bites her nails but not nearly as often and now I just have to remind her when I see she is doing it.

Kyle has been a biter in the past, when he was younger I just let it go but as he got older I would ask him to stop when I saw him doing it. I realized not too long ago that I had not asked him in a long time and realized I had actually been cutting his nails again with the clippers. Now he gets so proud of himself when I ask to check his nails to see if he needs them cut and he does. I didn't use anything on his nails or anything just waited until he was a little older to understand that fingernails have germs etc and it wasn't good for him to be biting them.

My DD used to bite her nails. I dont know how we got her to stop, but my mom helped. I told her that i wouldnt paint her nails unless they looked pretty. and i made sure that i "did" her nails once a week. cut and filed.. and then painted. She just doesnt do it anymore

Mine have both been biting their's for a few months now...it's an annoying habit. Their hands are ALWAYS in their mouths. I wish I had some advice for you, but we're going through it too.
