Anyone else get their school supply list yet?

Now that we officially have 2 2nd graders :) , their supply list came home. Not only do they each need 4 boxes of 24 crayons (well, Marcus actually went through about 6-7 this year), they need 5 boxes of SHARPENED pencils, EACH! I think I will be lazy and pay the extra money for the presharpened ones!

They also have about 10-12 other items on there.

I have been spoiled by K and 1st which had tiny lists.

My oldest will be starting K this year, and I actually saw the list on the school website. There wasnt a whole lot on there; simple stuff. Im not jealous of you having TWO second graders, as their lists are much longer, and having to buy it double?? Nah, Im happy with my ONE kindergartener! :p

Oh my gosh, do you remember my post last fall about how many pencils I had to sharpen? It was ridiculous! I'm definitely buying presharpened this year!

We don't receive supply lists until we pick them up at registration, a week before school begins. I don't like to wait that long, though, so I always look the lists up on our school district's Web site, get my shopping done, and leave it in the bags with the receipts, because the individual teachers always modify the lists at least a little. I make needed changes the week before school starts, and that usually works out OK.

Amy, I am right with you. I think of you whenever I sharpen a bunch for them :) I scour the Target and Staples curculars for specials, and buy when things are on sale, like $.50 for a box of crayons. I figure then I can afford the luxury of the presharpened pencils :)

Amy, I always think of you too when I have to sharpen more than 1 pencil, lol.

Funny you brought this topic up Sharon. The girls last day was yesterday. They came home with their supply list and teacher assignment attached to their report card. So, I plugged away at getting the supplies. I used quill.com (they had pre-sharpened Ticonderoga). I ordered it yesterday late afternoon, and the UPS guy just dropped the box off 15 minutes ago! I did NOT pay for fast shipping. I knew I had 2+ months, lol.

I love school supplies though. I enjoy buying them, but the list is definitely getting longer and more expensive. Oh well, I guess it is a good thing that they are using all these supplies!

Yesterday was my boy's last day of school, and they brought home their supply list for next year. I appreciated their sending it now so that I can hunt for things on sale over the summer. I know I see lots of that stuff in the $1 bins at Target.

We are only asked to bring 2 12-packs of sharpened Ticonderoga pencils (specifically asked NOT to buy Papermate, Office Dept, Staples or Off-brands. WHY?), of course, that means 48 pencils total for 2 boys.

Ellen, I think because they write and erase way much better than the others. Plus, they sharpen super fast. They are by far my favorite pencils.

Last school year, I HAD to buy Prang watercolors for all my kids. I made a special trip to Office Depot to find them and paid 4 times as much as the RoseArt brand at Target. And guess what -- all three sets of Prang paints came back home at the end of the year UNUSED. :gah: I don't mind making the extra effort and paying more, but it really burns me when the stuff isn't even touched.

My Kindergartners had to produce a fresh box of crayons every month all year long. I have 800,000 crayons now!

Are they allowed to use mechanical pencils? I haven't gotten any supply lists yet. I think Nadia's school provides the supplies for kindergarten.

I used to use Dixon Ticonderoga exclusively when I was in grade school...haven't thought about them since then! Had no idea that they came pre-sharpened. :good:

We didn't have a list last year for KG, but I'm wondering if the teachers will have a list now that she's going to 1st grade. Either way, I haven't heard anything about it. We did offer to provide things to the KG teacher such as papertowels, kleenex, clorox wipe, etc. which he did take us up on, but he said that they provided all the materials/supplies they would need. And boy, did they go through a lot. We usually don't get teacher lists until the week before school starts here, so I may not even find out until Sept. if we have anything to get.

Generally not in the lower grades. The kids tend to push all the lead out, and then they have no pencil. Kind of why they don't want sharpeners, and the pencils come sharpened (kids are obsessed with sharpening pencils!)

In K, Jon's teacher did approve of him using the Twistables pencils by Crayola. But I stopped getting them because they were going through the leads too fast.

No, but I wish I had one. My girls are moving up to 6th grade (Jr. high) next year which is a new school for them. I'm sure the supplies will be a bit different from the elementary level. They have an orientation day at the school at the end of August, but all the school supplies go on sale in July  . I guess I can just get the basics of what I'm pretty sure they'll be using and pick up whatever else later.

My oldest will be in 6th in sept., too. To make the school less intimidating, they have "houses" white, blue and gold, I think. If you're in the white house (or, blue, or gold), you have all your classes in a hall, that you share with 7th graders also in the white house. Your locker is also there in that hallway.
It seems like a way to make the adjustment easier on kids -- I've heard lots of good things bout the kids and the teachers getting to know each other very well, and cohesive groups forming, etc.
But I got the supply list for them, and EACH HOUSE has its own list, as well as a sep. list of common supplies needed by all sixth graders, regardless of house. The kids don't find out what house they're in until orientation, which is in August. On the bottom of the list in small type, it says that one way to handle this is to buy things at intervals all summer, but to keep the receipts. I guess the idea is that if you've bought supplies your child doesn't need, you can return them.
Wow!!! I realized the change from elem. school to sixth would be a big one, but this was a real reminder. We're now in a different world!!

We get the school supply list the last week of school for the next year. Even better is you can buy premade kits for our school. If you order them (pay) in May then you get a discount. but you can buy them in Aug/sept

Now yes I do think I could buy most of it all cheaper when Walmart goes on sale, but I do not have to look for it all. Some things like the red baseline notebooks are not easy to find. And they want certain colors of folders so math is red, spelling blue, etc. The kit is worth it not go to muliple stores to get everything I need for 3 kids in school. The PTO makes a little money on it as well so it is all good for me.

As far as I know the girls haven't brought home lists for next year, they won't even know until late summer who their teacher is. I did however find a clearance sale at our local wal mart that had some school supplies on sale. Silly things like erasers, pencils (I get mechanical for them to use at home), highlighters, and the all important HSM and Hannah Montana folders. I have already put it away for fall, and will be looking for all sales from now until then. Especially with my current job status, I may have to have their dad pick up more of it this year.

Connor & Maddie brought home their supply lists on the last day of school in their report card. One of the other parents was complaining because we have to buy supplies this year. Apparently the school district has been getting the supplies for the students but this year because of budget cuts the parents actually have to buy them. Oh the horror!!

    The supplies are (per child):
    20 pencils- not mechanical
    block erasers-2
    Pencil Box
    Crayons- 24 pack
    Dry erase markers- 4
    Scissors- age appropriate
    glue sticks- 6
    sticky notes 3x3
Pocket folders- red, blue, green, yellow
    ruler

Wow!!! How great is that? I'd LOVE that!
Hearing that and about the pre-sharpened pencils are the best news I've had (supply-wise) ever.

Sorry - I tried to quote and hit the wrong keys.

Yes, we got our list recently for K - it's actually a bit smaller than the boys' preschool list. I like the idea of pre-packed kits from the PTA - thanx, Cindy, I'll share that with our PTA! Happy supplying everyone
