I went to get results from a biopsy I had last week. The Dr confirmed that I had a golf ball sized tumor in my thyroid gland.

I don't know how cancer treatment works while pregnant, and was hoping to find someone else that might have been through something similar.

Thank you in advance for any advicce.

First of all, I´m very, very sorry to hear about your situation.
I´m sorry I can´t be much help, the only thing I can tell you is that a friend of mine was diagnosed with linfatic cancer in September. She was 28 weeks pregnant by then...After several medical meetings (between oncologist, OB, neonatologist, etc...)discussing if they should proceed with chemiotherapy with the baby in utero or have her deliver inmediately, they decided she could keep the baby in utero and begin with the chemio. I can´t tell you the results yet because she will be induced next week, all I know is the baby is doing well and she hasn´t felt as sick as we all expected....
I´ll let you know next week how my friend and her baby are doing once she delivers...
I wish you the best luck for you and your babies, keep strong! You´ll be in my prayers....

My cousin had the same thing, as I recall, she wasn't able to receive treatment while pregnant. She ended up having her thyroid removed, they use serious radiation, so she had to be away from her children for 3 days.

Good luck, I'm sorry for your scary news.

I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer earlier this year. I wasn't pregnant - my boys were about 10 months old at the time. I had a total thyroidectomy, radio-active iodine therapy, and now I'm on thyroid replacement hormone (for the rest of my life). While the experience certainly wasn't "fun" it was tolerable and thinking of my babies made everything seem manageable. Even though they were too little to know what was going on, they were great cheerleaders. I guess for the most part the whole experience was just inconvenient. Surgery, doctor's visits, a special diet, the radio-active iodine and subsequent quarantine. BUT...thyroid cancer is treatable and it's slow growing. So you can probably do everything after your babies are born. The radio-active iodine (and surgery, come to think of it) might make nursing difficult as a long-term thing (maybe you could nurse for a few months and then do the treatment, if it's really important to you?). You're going to need help - you'll be dependent on others to care for you and your kids while you're in treatment. BUT, the recovery isn't too bad at all and there is no pain associated with the actual cancer itself (just the incision from the surgery). Sorry this is happening to you. But thyroid cancer has one of the highest cure rates around and I consider myself healthy today. I had my surgery in April, my radio-active iodine in August, and we've got my meds straightened out now so my energy level is fine. I don't want to diminish what you're going through because I'm sure it's a shock, but my friend (who also had thryoid cancer) says there's Cancer with a capital C (breast cancer, liver cancer, brain cancer - the big stuff) and then there's cancer with a small c. Thyroid cancer is definitely the small c kind. You're going to be okay! It's a bump in the road, but you can do it. Chemo is not one of the treatments and radio-active iodine is completely painless.
Best of luck and feel free to PM me anytime.

I worked on a floor where we had post-op patients who had thyroid and parathyroid surgeries. I can't tell you much about the course of treatment since you are pregnant but I did find that the pain post-op was definately tolerable to most patients. Some other types of surgeries pain can be more difficult to control.

I'm sorry that you had to find out these results during a time which should only be happy. It really is a miracle for you to be pregnant with your diagnosis. I hope your two little miracles give you strength to fight through any fears you may have.

My mom had thyroid cancer about 3 years ago. She had the same course of treatment as a pp and has been cancer free ever since. I know she put off her radiation therapy for a few months (she wanted a "convienient time" to be incapacitated for a while... that's my mom! =D) I would talk to your doctor about your options.

Good luck and lots of hugs your way.

I guess I had thyroid cancer the whole time I was pregnant too. It didn't negatively impact my pregnancy at all. My boys were born at 37.5 weeks and were 6 lbs 2 oz. and 6 lbs 9 oz. I hope that makes you feel better! Do you have an endocrinologist? An ear-nose-and-throat doctor? Who is in charge of your care?

I was diagnosed with Stage 1B Cervical Cancer at 16 weeks pregnant with my girls, its supposed to be one of the BEST times of your life, then the big C word comes into play....

I made a the decision with input from my DRs to with-hold any and all treatment until after the girls where born. After my 6 week recovery time, we will start an action plan, including radiation and chemo. My choice to wait was a personal one, and the cancer in NO wat negitively effected my pregnancy. my girls came at 34 weeks, due to pre-e. Now that they are here, healthy and happy. I can focus my energy on getting healthy too.
