I know protein is super important and I want big babies. So far they are doing great. At my 24 appointment they were 1lbs 10oz and 1lbs 12oz (I am now 26 weeks), my next u/s is at 28 weeks and I would love them to be at least pound bigger or more. I eat tons of cottage cheese (very high in protein) I also eat protein bars from time to time, lots of eggs, milk and cereal and chicken. But the more protein the better, anyone drink protein shakes, and if so what kind?

I did! I had 3 a day from 28 weeks on. I tried the Boost and Ensure vanilla flavored, and Ensure was my favorite. It was better tasting, but slightly lower in protein, if I am remembering correctly. I believe that either Costco or Sams carries them, if you want to buy in bulk!

I drink the Boost High Protein in chocolateand vanilla, they have 15gm of protein. They taste ok, I have 2 a day. Sam's Club carries Boost in 24 packs and it's about $23-24.

I just started drinking the Boost Chocolate drinks. I made DH try it first. He smelled it and wow the look on his face :p Then he tasted and said that it wasn't bad. Then I did, and honestly, it taste like Cocoa Krispies to me. So they are not bad at all.

I worry about too much soy consumption, especially processed soy, so I opt to make my protein shakes at home.

I use one banana, one 4 oz. flavored yogurt, one cup of milk, a handful of frozen fruit and one or two scoops of whey protein powder (vanilla ice cream flavor from GNC). It's filling, and fairly nutritious.....and with one scoop of the powder, I think it has about 35 grams of protein (if you count the milk and yogurt). If you double the powder, it gets really thick -- but it really increases the protein, of course.

I try to have one a day.....but I do eat a lot of meat and other forms of protein, too.

This is what I use, too. I use chocolate but mayhave to try the vanilla flavor. I try to do one a day with at least 2 scoops. I go to a coffee shop regularly that makes protein shakes and I always get one there. When I make my own, I sometimes put in fruit, yogurt and so on. I feel so full all the time that tonight drinking my dinner was the best option so Ihad fresh strawberries, 3 scoops of whey protein, vanilla yogurt, ice and milk blended. It was pretty yummy!!

I don't know if it is a coincidence but since I started them, my babies have really grown. They measured 2 weeks ahead at the last u/s putting them at 3lbs 10 ounces at 29 weeks. :D

I drink the high protein strawberry boosts every once in a while. I am also a big chicken eater, and at my 32 week appoint. my babies weighed an estimated 4lbs 12oz and 4lbs 8 oz's.
I can't wait to here what they are at when and if I make it to my 36 weeks appointment. which is only a week and a half away. I am hoping for 6lbs each, atleast.

I drink the Boost high protein shakes as well, my ob put me on them twice a day b/c I can't seem to gain weight during this pregnancy. I tried the Ensure high proteins and couldn't swallow them down, but the Boost chocolate flavor is much better.

I've been doing a lot of "protien supplementation" because for some reason the pg. has made me totally adverse meats of all kinds....i can stomach some, but like a whole chicken breast makes me want to yack! (which is SOOOO unlike me usually)

I do the boost hp chocolate as well ('cause it's easy to take to work, on the go ect) and I make some shakes at home (bannan, milk, dry milk powder, GNC vanella whey protien powder, frozen berries, and a dash of vanilla extract - yummy! and about 40 gm protien)

I also am a big milk drinker, and i have been adding dry powdered milk to my milk (it tastes about the same) - to boost each glass from 8 grams protien to 16 (for me its a good way to add protien without adding too much volume)

    Good luck!

i did drink Boost shakes til about 24 weeks or so - 1 a day, though my docs were never thrilled with that (and I hated the taste). they finally said I really needed to stop drinking them. Although they are high in protein, they can mess with your blood sugar. They felt that more natural protein sources (like what you are already having) would be much better.

Have you asked your doc about this?

why do you worry about too much soy?? I thought soy was good for you.

I have also been making my own at home. The pre-made kind are way too sweet for me. But I am using a soy protein powder. I think it's about 24 grams of protein in 1 scoop. I prefer the unflavored kind. I do it two ways - I make a fruit smoothie with frozen fruit, OJ, yogurt, and a scoop of protein powder. Or I make my own kind of protein drink - with milk, a banana, chocolate ovaltine and protein powder.

I also have been eating bars - Zone Perfect bars - I buy them by the case at costco. It's like eating a candy bar, but has 16 grams of protein.

Lisa -- soy contains a lot of phytoestrogens, which can affect the thyroid and cause other problems. It's a pretty controversial topic -- google "dangers of soy consumption" -- and you'll find all kinds of things. Critics of soy will say it's responsible for all kinds of ailments, including cancer, etc. Others say it's all scare tactics.

So, who knows....but, I did read that a baby consuming soy formula exclusively was getting the equivalent of 5 birth control pills worth of estrogen per day. Some are even linking the rise in peanut and other allergies in kids to excessive soy consumption -- it's impossible to buy any processed food (Boost and Ensure, protein bars, etc.) that doesn't contain soy, so pregnant women -- and everyone else in the U.S. -- consume a lot of it.

I've just read so many negative things about soy protein isolates -- the highly processed soy in packaged foods -- that I just prefer to avoid it, and get protein a different way....

My dh makes me protein smoothies with fruit. He uses rice protein powder--I also didn't want to use soy protein, even though I do eat a fair amount of soy products. I thought it was odd that they derive protein from rice, but apparently they do. He also adds dry milk solids.

I didn't exactly drink protein shakes, but I drank a chocolate milkshake (yum!) with extra whey protein almost every night before bed. (I didn't want to use soy protein after I did some research on it -- also, I was already getting some in the Balance Bars that I ate every few days. Whey is probably the same thing as dry milk solids...?) I added it to lots of stuff (yogurt, ice cream, smoothies), but I learned the hard way not to add it to anything hot. I put it in my oatmeal one morning and almost lost my cookies.
