We just had one cake with a generic picture, I can't even remember what it was now  that said Happy Birthday Emilie and Trevor. We really didn't have a theme as they weren't into anything at that time, but just had balloons and stuff. Like you I will probably have separate parties for them as they get older, but for the first few years when it's just family we will do them together.

I found some really cute decorations at Wal-Mart that could be for either, b/g. They have a bear with a #1, and the colors are pink, purple, green, blue, and yellow. They have these really cute matching decorations to decorate their highchairs with. We are getting one cake for the guests and 2 small ones for the babies, with colors that match the decorations. Our party is Saturday, and I will post pics.

I was thinking of doing cupcakes for each of the girls and then have decorate your own cupcakes for the guests.

I just did a post in 1-5 years about 1st birthday parties - I am hoping to get some great ideas from parents have already been through it!

There is a website called 1stWishes.com for first birthday ideas or themes is that is the way you want to go. We are also going to do a main cake for guests and two small cakes for the boys.

We had 3 cakes. The grocery store (Safeway & Albertsons that I know of) give out free 1st birthday cakes (little ones) so each baby had t heir own cake to dig into then our family and friends all ate from the other cake.

We didn't do a theme, they are 1 y/o. It was mostly an adult party. I feel that 1 year parties are for the praents, you made it through the first year!! COngrats!!

We had cupcakes. B/G here so we used Elmo/Sesame Street as a theme.

The first year we didn't really have a "theme." For me the theme was all about survival -- we MADE it! Lots of balloons and colorful plates and decorations. Any cake. Later it'll matter what the theme is, for now just think PARTY! (well, that's what we did anyway...)

I love the "survial" quote....I guess we did survive huh?? I never thought about having three cakes but I guess the babies will destroy their own....oh decisions decisions.....

For their first birthday we got one generic cake for the boys - we did Elmo since that's what they were into the first year. We did get them their own personal mini cakes to dig into though. The theme was Sesame Street - which isn't really gender specific.

After their first birthday we've done separate cakes since they had different tastes, but didn't go all out with a theme or decorations. Just some balloons since they get all excited about those.
