Any other kids put things in their noses?

Elizabeth thinks it is really funny to put things in her nose. First, it was scrambled eggs, then a piece of cereal. I saw her both times and was easily able to remove them. Yesterday at breakfast, she tried to put a piece of cantaloupe in her nose, but it was too big to fit. Then, at dinner, she put a piece of cucumber in her nose. DH was with her but did not see her put it in her nose. When I got home from work, she kept pointing at her nose, so I looked in it with a flashlight and saw something green. We got it out pretty easily, but I had visions of going to the hospital over a piece of cucumber in the nose. Any other kids put things in their noses? Please tell me this is a short phase! So far, Elizabeth is the only one doing it. Hopefully, Grace will not share in this activity.

Yep I have one that LOVED sticking things up her nose. She is almost 4yrs old now and doesnt do it anymore....thankfully! She has put up her nose.....peas,tortias,rolled up bread, paper, mellon, green beans, corn, meat and more. Most of them were easy to get out but there were also ALOT that was very hard to get out. One time I called the emergency and I had a nurse on the phone and she told me to lay her on the floor or bed. Then she told me to cover the nostril that DIDNT have anything in it. Then she said for me to blow in her mouth. As soon as I did that a big pea came flying out of her nose. I couldnt belevie it worked! We used that ALOT to get things out that I couldnt see. When she got older and learned how to blow her nose I would cover the nostril that had nothing in it and then I would have her blow her nose. It worked every time. Sometimes she would walk around bugging her nose(picking it)and she would tell me she "got someting there"(which was a object other then what usually is in the nose).

Malena is the only one that did this. Sofia had no interest in putting things in her mouth. Malena is alomst 4now and she doesnt do it anymore. She stopped like around 2yrs old.

This just happened yesterday for the first time - Clarissa discovered that peas fit perfectly in her nose! I was across the table yelling for DH to grab her finger as she was trying to push the pea farther up, but he didn't get it . . . I had to explain to him that if it got stuck up there we'd end up going to the emergency room, so then he started paying attention.

We didn't have to blow in her mouth - I just blocked her other nostril and closed her mouth and she blew it out on her own, but it wasn't too far in there. Hopefully this will be very short lived . . .

Not these babies yet but my now 4 year old DD put a bead up her nose when she was 2. I could see it with a flash light and she kept screaming for me to get it out. I finally did, a couple minutes before we were to go to the after hours doctor's office. She never did it again.

This is exactly what the emergency Dr. told me to do when Troy put a mini M&M up his nose!

*for the record I did not give him the mini M&M, my mother did!

When I was little about 3 I put a pony bead up my nose and as you know they have a rather large hole in them so we had to go to the emergency room

I got a call from daycare saying that Madison had put a cereal marshmellow up her nose and they did get it out with a little bit of difficulty. I think it's just a phase!

Thanks for sharing that method of removal...hope I don't have to use it. :icon_biggrin:

I was just going to add that you should continue to be as watchful as you have been, since she is going through this phase. I recall when I first started teaching, a child in my friend's class had put a pea or two in his nose and it went undetected...until there was a noticeable odor. It had to be removed by a doctor and it had caused a minor infection.

I'm sorry to have to say this, but in my oldest son's case it was NOT a short lived phase. It started around a year old with peas, raisins, etc...all small & easy to fish out. It lasted a while, I think the highlight was at 3 years old when he got a bead stuck up his nose & had to be brought to the ER (on vacation, just hours before our departing flight!).

The good news is he eventually stopped doing this...and today he's a well-adjusted 9 year old :)

Hope things improve quicker than they did for us!!
