Any idea what this is about?

Tom did this once last week and then again last night - he'll wake up at a fairly normal time (usually 11 and 4), but instead of crying out and then settling down, he'll cry out and then be awake 'singing' to himself (talking, muttering, not sure what it is or even if he's really awake) on and off for an hour or two. He will wake up completely if I go in to offer a binkie and try to settle him, and then gets really mad if I leave again. It doesn't wake Jack, but it does wake ME, and of course he's a total crab apple the next day and usually refuses at least one of his naps.

Last week I thought it was a cold - he had just started coming down with one. But now he's had the cold for a while and has been sleeping pretty well...He just got all 4 of his first molars a couple of weeks ago, so teething seems out of the question...is it?

Any ideas? I'm desperate to get more consistent sleep (for both of us, but mostly me since I don't get to take naps :).

I had a similar issue with Aaron. I even asked the ped about it when it went on for several weeks! I never went in because, like you, that just made it worse. There was nothing wrong, we just had to wait it out. What I ended up doing was turning the monitor way down so that I barely heard the talking/singing but I could still hear a loud cry. Good luck, it was three and a half years ago and I still remember it!

I'm having a issue with Logan sort of like yours. Logan was getting up about 2-3 hours after he goes to bed everynight and a few times after that. Most of the time he would go back to sleep with a paci and a back rub.
My ped. said she thinks it is night terrors. She told me to wake him up about an hour after he goes to bed at night, b/c this will off set his usual sleep cycle. I was NOT happy about getting him up after he went to bed <_< . However....I did do it out of desperation and I must say it's working.
Maybe it would be worth a try?

Yup, its a phase. Mine went through that about a year ago but then stopped. Sometimes they still wake up and cry a little but have been going back to sleep. Sorry for the no sleep. I hope it ends soon.

I have one that also went through that phase, and still occassionally does. He's a 4 am waker. Almost everytime it happens, it's at 4am!

mine do this between 1 and 3 am, but in our case, it's always been related to teething...maybe it's still the molars coming thru? good luck, it stinks when they do this!
