Ok, we moved the twins into their toddler beds last Sunday night. They are 2 years and 1 month old. We have moved 2 times in the last 45 days and that last time we moved in with my parents. It was a 12 hour drive to get here and things just arent "normal". My DH is upset because for the last week we have to sit in the bedroom with the kids until they fall asleep, he is upset that we are wasting a our of our day by doing this. I told him that until they felt comfortable with living here and the new beds that I would do whatever I had to do. He thinks that they need to be independent. UGH!!! I just wanted to get everyones thoughts.

I guess my question is for how long did you have to sit in with your kids while they fell asleep before you just started putting them to bed and leaving the room?

    TIA

I never stayed there until they fell asleep. We just do the same routine we did with the crib, get tucked into the toddler bed, say night night, and then I leave. I think you need to teach them to fall asleep on their own otherwise you're always going to be spending an hour of your evening waiting for them to fall asleep.

Umm... I've been sitting in the room for the past 4 months. :( I have just been able to leave when my son falls asleep and dd will stay in. I think that because of your situation, moving, it is the least you can to to make them feel comfortable. The only other alternative is to shut the door and hope for the best! :hug99:

I never sat in the room either but I waited until the girls were over 3 years old before switching to toddler beds. I did get antsy and do the switch a little bit after 2 yrs but that just didn't work out at all because they didn't have the self-control needed to stay in bed and not play. One thing you can do is try to gradually move yourself out of the room. Bring down your level of interaction with them every night until you are just sitting by the door quietly. Then leave. If DH doesn't want to be in there, you can do it by yourself. Good luck!

Like Alison, I waited till they were 3 because I didn't think the would be able to control themselves with getting out of bed. I've never stayed in the room while they fell asleep. We just made sure to keep our same routine in place when we made the switch.

Thanks for all the advice. We were going to wait until they were a little older, but they were to the point that they were climbing in and out of their cribs all the time. I figured that it was probably less dangerous for them to be in a toddler bed.
