So we have drop side cribs that convert to toddler beds. They were not on the latest recall but as you probably know there is talk of just not even manufacturing drop side cribs anymore. We've never had a problem with ours but I'm worried about it now since it seems to be a big deal. My girls will be 2 in February and have never climbed out of the cribs but I really don't know how they would do in beds.
So would you go ahead and make the switch to the beds?

BTW: I can't just put the drop side against the wall because one side of the crib is higher up, similar to this (not the crib we have, but the build is similar)

Personally, no, I wouldn't let this latest crib issue rush your switch to toddler beds. Drop side cribs get a really bad rap, but the vast majority of them are safe. Take ten minutes and check that the slide down side is installed correctly (not upside down) and that the plastic track isn't cracking or pulling away from the crib. Then make sure the mattress fits snuggly up against the drop side. (and then if you were me, that would enough)

All that said... I moved my girls to toddler beds from drop side cribs at 20 months with no issues. They were never climbers, we just felt like making the switch. And it was easy.

Thanks, I know ours are installed properly and like I said we haven't had any reason to think they are unsafe, just a little concerned about all the recalls.

We have a drop side crib also, but there is no way I'm switching to toddler beds - mine are really not ready for it. The problem with drop side cribs is that they started making the hardware in plastic instead of metal, so it's easier to break... plus they're harder to assemble and apparently a lot of them are not assembled right... and I guess after the bad rep they had and for money reasons it was easier to just stop making them than fixing the problem.

I guess it depends how much you are using the drop side too. Honestly I never used it much because it was a bit of a pain to put back, so I was uncomfortable about it. I haven't used it in months, so I'm not too worried that it will break. The irony is that we got that crib after the Jardine recall 16 months ago too! Wish I had known at the time!

If your girls are not having a problem with the cribs and their cribs were not recalled I would keep them in it. Toddler beds were a necessity for us b/c mine were jumping out of their cribs every night and that was not safe. But napping in the same room is so much easier in cribs. Cribs are just all the way around easier than toddler beds.

I agree with this. We had to switch my DD from her crib to toddler bed because she kept climbing out. Her crib is a drop side crib (not recalled) and it converted to a toddler bed. I wish she was still in her crib for naps but she does great at bedtime with it. I would not make the switch unless you have to. My DS is in his crib still and he is going to stay in there until he starts a climbing out.

thanks ladies I feel better about it. I honestly don't think I've used the drop side but a few times and it was when they were much much younger. So I think we're good!
