So, in reading, most books say babies need an early bedtime -- 6:30 or so is the average I saw. Anyway, if I put my girls down at 6:30, they'd get to see their Dad (and he see them) for about 15 minutes on a good day. How do others deal with this?

Well, we are in the same situation. My hubby gets home just in time to feed the girls and put them to bed. He gets up with them every morning and has about 2 hours with them then. Their sleep and keeping the routine is important and we don't want to mess with that. He hates not being able to spend time with them at night but what can you do????
Our girls are 7 1/2 months old.

When do the girls get up in the morning? When does DH get up/leave for work?

We start the bedtime routine (nurse, baths, bottles, bed) around 6, and they're usually asleep by 7. DH gets home from work a little after 5. Like you said, not much time with the babies. But he gets to spend time with them most mornings - they wake up anytime between 6:30 and 8, and he doesn't have to leave for work until about 8:15.

That's tough. My husband gets home from work at about 5:45 and he immediately baths the boys (their Q.T.), I put them in their PJs, we feed them together, and we put them to bed together (although it's mostly me doing the putting down because the boys are used to me, since I put them down for naps all day). So he gets only a short while with them in the evening. But he's up with them every morning for about 2 hours (6:30 to 8:20) and he spends every spare second with them on the weekends.

It's not easy, I know. But I hate to hold up bedtime because it's so important/healthy for the babies. They talk a lot about this in HSHHC - also about trying to do an early bedtime when both parents work.

My dh leaves at 6.30 am, and comes home around 7.00/7.30 pm. So he makes long days. It's 7.00 pm here, and he's still not home, which is normal. Kids are all down (so some computer time for me!).

My oldest he hardly gets to see, unless I am a little late (closer to 7.15 pm) and he's early (closer to 7.00 pm). It has always been like that. She sleeps til 7.00 am in the morning, at least and has done so since 3 months of age (sometimes she wakes earlier but she stays in bed). Today I put her down at 6.40 pm since she had school and they only have 45 minute nap time (and obviously she didn't nap - normally she sleeps 1.15-3.00 pm).

Twins very similar. They used to go to bed at 6.00 pm, now 6.30 pm. They wake around 5.30/6.00 am and we both go down (duplex down) to feed them, so he "sees" them (but we keep it dark since they go back down until 7.00 am).

So basically he doesn't see them during the week. It's hard, but we both feel that we need to do what's best for our children. Our children do well with early bed times and the schedule we have. We can enjoy the evenings together, also in the weekends. Our children are well rested and that's worth a lot for us. I am a SAHM so yes, that makes it easier for me to do this. I start dinner around 5.15 pm or so.

Yup, my DH doesn't see them either. Weekends are big though. :) They'll have plenty of time when they're older w/ him. Right now, I feel it's important for them to sleep.
