When we were at the pedi's office a couple weeks ago I was talking about all her "nervous habits" (playing with spit and picking her nose - ya know, really LOVELY stuff) well, BEHIND ALI'S BACK, ALI COULD NOT SEE HER - she said "At least she's not - and then she twirled her own hair" and NOW SHE IS TWIRLING HER HAIR!!! (Her hair is really fine and her finger is getting stuck! ) She knows I don't want her to, so she does it! :cray: I am actually REALLY worried about this one! I don't want her pulling chunks out of her hair! :cray:

    WHAT DO I DO?

:hug99: I think this is the key point. If she is doing it to get a reaction from you then you need to do your best to totally ignore it (even though it's hard). I would try to tie her hair back as much as possible so she can't get at it as easily. Also when you notice her doing it you can distract her with an activity that needs both hands. Don't draw attention to the hair twirling, just get them doing/playing with something-practically any game or toy will work-and she will probably get so involved that she forgets to twirl her hair.

I don't think she will necessarily pull her hair out. I am a hair twirler. I do it when I'm bored or nervous and I don't really know what to do with my hands. I've always twirled my hair, and my mom said I used to play with her hair as a baby. I've also got a nose picker (Ainsley) and a spitter (Bea). I find the bigger deal I make out of it, the more they do it.

Another hair twirler here too. I have been doing it all my life and have NEVER pulled out hair, even as a kid. I also have (Guineess Book of World Records) fine, thin hair. If I hadn't chopped all my hair off a few months ago I'd still be doing it.

I don't think it's anything to worry about, and agree with the pick-your-battles/don't-make-it-stink suggestions above.

Thanks you guys. This potty training week has me with a very deflated sense of knowing what I am doing. (She keeps getting her finger STUCK and it's really tricky to get it out!)

    I appreciate the feedback!~

One of my girls is a hair twirler. But she does not have fine hair. She has very curly hair so it knots up. You should have seen the knot that she had the on Friday morning. I think i used almost 1/2 a bottle of detangler and still did not get it all out. Then dh comber her hair in the evening and got the rest out.

If her hair was long enough you could just tie it back in a pony tail. Other than that I think that ignoring it might be best. It's funny, because just this morning Sofia was also twirling her hair. I told her not to do it because it might hurt when I brush it if she has tangles in it. That was enough for her to stop. She hates it when I brush her hair when it's a little tangled.
