Another cold

Josh just got another cold on Saturday night. He was okay yesterday during the day but at night he started feeling hot. He is phlegmy, has a runny none and has not been able to sleep unless he's held. He sleeps for a bit if I put him down but then keeps waking up. I had to work today so my hubby stayed up with him and slept on the rocking recliner in the living room.

I have been giving him acetominophen and that helps with the temperature, which has not been very high but still. I only left his onesie on to keep him cool but I'm not sure I should be doing anything else.

    Any suggestions?

Cold with high temp is no good. Poor little guy! He sounds in bad shape. I would call doc office and ask to talk to a nurse. My kids don't have high temp when they get cold. It might be a^n infection or dehydrated. Has he been drinking enough? He might not want formula. Give him pedialyte or breast milk. Take his rectal temp every time you change his diaper. Run a humidifier with vicks if you have, so he would breath easily. Hope he gets well soon. And momma hang in there hugs!

Our pedi let us start giving small doses of Benadryll at 6 months for the runny nose....you could ask your pedi about that. It doesn't get rid of all of it, but it does help some.

Our ped said about 6 months ago the AMA said no benedyrl before age 6! I was like WHAT?!?! but I guess they have their reasons.

I have heard great things about putting Vicks rub on their feet then letting them sleep in light weight footie jammies. I am allergic to eucaliptis so I can't have vicks in the house but I have friends who SWEAR by it.

I've used Vick's Baby Rub on my kids feet whenever they have a cough. I also put a small amount of their chest. Works like a charm. Have you tried elevating his crib? That helps a little too. And lastly, the vaporizer going too. I've even done the plug-in's too.

If he still has a fever tomorrow, I would call the pedi. Could he have an ear infection? Nicholas had an ear infection, and I didn't even know it until it was almost gone. I felt awful! And he was older too!

Good luck! I hope he feels better soon!

Apparently Vicks shouldn't be used on babies as it the ingredients can be irritants, causing the body to produce more mucus to protect the airway.

Yes. That is for directly under the nose. At three, I still wouldn't do that to my kids. And that's what this study was about-directly under the nose. It irritates me too. I wouldn't want it there. However, it's on their feet, covered up in socks and footed pj's. And it's on their lower chest, under their shirts/pajamas. Not directly under their nose.

I put a few drops of 100% eucalyptus oil in the vaporizer. Works great and much cheaper than the plug-ins. I also use the Vicks rub. Saline nasal spray works well for nasal congestion.

For fever and discomfort from the fever, you could alternate motrin (given every 6-8 hours) and tylenol (given every 4-6 hours). If doses coincide that's fine, as per my ped, they work differently so you aren't going to overdose baby.

As for congestion, same as others...use humidifer, saline nose spray and suction. Try to elevate the head end of the crib with a wedge to help with congestion while sleeping. Otherwise, there's not much else to do at that age. Sorry the little guy isn't feeling well, and I hope it passes quickly. A fever ranging around or over 102 for 3 or more days would warrant a call to the ped for me, just to check the ears and sinuses for infection as a precaution.

Thank you for all of the suggestions!

The ped said to bring him in tomorrow if he's still not feeling well. He's been feverish for the last day and half but finally this morning he's better. He's not sleeping so much and he's drinking breastmilk like there's no tomorrow. Hopefully it's gone...
