We are having two girls. One baby will likely be named Karina. We're still working on a second name. I narrowed our list down to three and asked DH which was his favorite. He chose Annelise. I like that spelling for a number of reasons:

    1. Anne is my middle name.
    2. Elise was my paternal great grandmother.

There is a problem though. DH feels the name is long and will likely get shortened. We can't shorten it to Anne because our last name is Jahn (pronounced Jan) and it rhymes.

I like the name Anna, but is it still too rhyming? Plus, it's not spelled that way. Does that matter? Although, my maternal great grandmother was Anna, so maybe we should reconsider the spelling.

I like Elise, but I'm not sure that is an intuitive nickname for Annelise.

What do you think? Maybe I'm over thinking this. Maybe we should just consider a different name altogether, but I kind of like this one.

I think it sounds fine Beth. I think nickname can be whatever you want. :)

When I was pregnant with my oldest DD, Caroline, I had someone ask me if we were going to call her Carley? We don't but I'm assuming somewhere along the way this lady heard that as a nickname to Caroline.

I like how you are putting your name and your grandmother's together, very special. :) All 3 of my kids have a family name somewhere and it just makes me feel like their name is that much more special because of it.

How about Annie? That's what we use for my oldest, Anjanette. I was going to use Angie, but then my SIL said our MIL suggested Annie. I loved it, and that's what she goes by. Or what about Lise (like lease)? My youngest, Elizabeth, goes by Ellie. Not sure how you get Ellie from Elizabeth, but she's definitely not a Liz!

I think you can make anything a nickname if it fits, and is logical enough. Like, you wouldn't call her something like Sara or Emmy as a nickname because it doesn't make sense. But you can call her wahtever you want, and usually people will follow your lead, especially once she gets to school if she decsides that is what she wants to be called at school. I have a friend named Alexandra

As for what nicknames there are for Annalise, I like:

    Lissa
    Lisa
    Lisie (Lee-see)
    Lissie
    Nallie (Nah-lie)
    Annie
    Anna
    Elise

In Germany her nickname would probably be Liesel, Liesl, Lies or Liesie. Lili and Lilo are cute, too.

I've known two people called Annelise and both were always called Annelise, and they weren't insistent.

BTW I love this name, I love it even better with the family connection. It's beautiful.

I think the obvious nickname for Annelise (which I love, BTW) is Anna. It doesn't need to be spelled the same. And I think Anna Jahn sounds fine.

There's also Annie, Lisa, or even Liesl (if you're feeling German :) -- I see TamJam had the same thought).

I agree, I think you can take the lead. A friend of mine named her daughter Genevieve and calls her Eve. She swears the child will never be called "Jen" -- though we'll see what happens when she starts school....

She'd likely become Annie or Lisie. Both of which I think are nice.

I don't think that Annelise is likely to be shortened. As long as you call her by her full name everyone else will follow suit.

    I love Annie,
    I also like Anna
and I really like lise too. (I'm imagining it pronounced like lease)
or how about elise? (There is a really nice Cure song about Elise)

I think that Annelise is beautiful and lovely left as a full name. But my natural instincts would nickname her Annie. I know an Anneliese who goes by Liesel and an Annalise who goes by Leah.

annalise is gorgeous, and if you stuck yo your guns she doesn't neccessarily have to have a nickname. I know a few families that have long names on their kids and they insist they don't get shortened, and they don't.

eg, one boy is about 8, his name is jackson, he was taught to say MY name is jackson, when people called him jack, so guess what everyone calls him...jackson.

If you don't want it shortened , then instist on it.

Ways to shorten it if you did would be in order of likliness (for me)

    anna
    annie
    leasy
    ellie

but i would be wary of anna and annie with your surname if it is prounounced jan (first thing that comes to mind is jelly jam....and i was not a mean kid at school!! :rotflmbo: )

annalise is a gorgeous name, especially since it has the family connections.
another nice alternative could be berinice (bear nn) probaby could be spelt a better way then i have though. I think that is a very fem name to pron aswell.

goodluck, i know you will make the right choice!

Beth...funny you should post this b/c DH and I loved the name annaliese but we could never agree on the shortened version of it so it got taken off our list. I think whatever you decide will be great...I definitely don't think Anna would be too rhymy. Anyway...good luck ;)
