These pendant lamps were inspired by Craig Steven's Andon table lamp which was in the FWW March 2022 issue. The kumiko pattern is from "The art of Kumiko" by Matt Kenney.

I made two lamps for our off grid cabin. They utilize 12 volt led bulbs. Since it ended up being a lot of kumiko, I chose the hash tag pattern for simplicity. It uses mainly slots. It only required a few 45 degree cuts to centre the hashtag in the grid. Washi paper was applied to mute the light.

The frame was made from walnut. I used my domino to join them rather than traditional tenon and mortise. The 5 mm dominos were a bit too wide for the frame pieces so I hid the blow out on the inside with the kumiko frames(last pic). A save. I really didn't want to rebuild the entire frames.

Finished with Minwax wipe on oil poly. No finish on the kumiko grids.

That combo of walnut and basswood sounds beautiful—I've used both in small projects and love how they contrast. I’m up in Edmonton and did a jewelry box in a similar mix last winter. Ended up displaying it on my las sola sideboard from sicotas—honestly, it made the piece feel extra special.
