    Hi,

I am 13 weeks pregnant, expecting non-identical twins. Since I am already 40 years old, I want to get an amnio (amniocentesis) test done. Does anybody know, if it is done at the same time as with one child, i.e. 16-18 weeks or is it different with twins? Is the risk much higher than with one? What would be the consequences? If there is any problem with just one child, is it possible to remove one and keep the other one (with non-identical twins). How would this be done? Is there any time limit for that?

Thank you very much for your answers!

Congratulations! I have no idea on the amnio question, but thought maybe if you posted this back in the expecting twins forum (this is the subforum for those of us who are expecting after already having twins) maybe you could get more specific answers from twin moms who are getting amnios on their twins currently. You'll definitely get more exposure there. My instinct tells me that it would probably be pretty much the same timeframe, just a little more tricky because of needing to do both babies???

    :wavey: Hi!

I had an amnio with them and it was up to 20 weeks I think. It was fairly easy and only a little pinch and burn of pain. There is ALWAYS risk, but your Peri should give you all that information! I took their advice and took it REAL easy for the rest of that day. I didn't want to take any chances. I think I took tylenol and laid around for the rest of the day. I had no problems.

    Good luck!!

I was just going to suggest you consider a CVS instead, but it may be too late for that ... If you find a problem with one of the babies, you can reduce one.

I know nothing about amnio! But I do have a question. How do they know your twins aren't identical. If the egg splits really early then the twins would have separate placentas and sacs. My twins are such twins. They were di/di twins and we did DNA testing just before they turned 1 and it came back that they were from the same zygote.
