i've read some conflicting reports on this topic. i know that unisom, benadryl and tylenol pm are safe category b meds for sleep but what do you do if those don't work anymore?

basically since becomming pregnant i have gotten less and less sleep each day. i started off being able to fall asleep around 1-2am and wake up around 8-9 no problem but every night has gotten progressively worse. the last couple of nights i wasn't able to fall asleep until 5am and got up at 10:30am. then last night 5am came and went and i wasn't even tired. i finally fell asleep at 7:30 in the morning and woke up at 11am. the weird part is that with just over 3 hours of sleep i don't feel completely terrible BUT i know that this is not good and i am seriously hating the fact that nothing i do seems to help me get normal rest.

i've read of some women taking ambien all throughout pregnancy and not having any problems at all and others say to stay away from it. my next appointment is on feb 9th and i'm definetly going to ask about it but i was just curious what everyone's opinions/experience on this may be.

i just need to get over this chronic insomnia. eventually i'm going to loose my mind!

My roommate in the hospital while i was on bedrest took 10mg of Ambien every night. We were under the care of Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialists, so it must be considered safe. She also took Tylenol #3 (with codeine) for a chronic type of pain. She came over with her 6 month old last night and was a completely normal, adorable baby. I personally didn't take the Ambien...I stuck with Benedryl which they had as a standing prn order for every antipartum.

I took it at the very end of the pregnancy while in the hospital, not sure about safety in the first trimester. I have insomnia(even when not pregnant!) so I feel your pain!

I'm on bedrest in the hospital, almost two weeks now, and they give me ambien every night. I asked the doctors when I was first offered it if it was safe and they said yes.

I'm in the hospital on bedrest (a week and a half now) and they offer it to me every night. I keep trying to go without it but then I sit awake all night :(

I was on it before pg and advised to get off before trying to get pg. I have not been able to sleep either but I think my body is just used to it now. I would ask your dr- they would know best.

I was on bed rest the last 3 months of my pregnancy. I was given Ambien every night when I was in the hospital (several weeks or so). I was also given a prescription and used it at home as needed.
    congrats on your pregnancy! Beth

I just got a 10mg script with 2 refills from my peri. I told them that I'd been taking a friend's and was about to run out (I already knew it was a safe med to take). They asked no questions and wrote the script. I only need to take 5mgs, though. I break the 10s in half. I still lie awake just a tiny bit, but once I'm asleep I'm great, rather than when I was waking up to pee every 2 hours (which I still do) and not being able to fall back asleep at all. 5mgs is enough to make me sleepy but not get that groggy feeling. The hospital gives so much that I feel like I'm tripping  I certainly don't need that at home!

I was on it before I got pregnant and quit taking it and switched to tylenol PM but that wasn't working so my dr prescribed me 5mg Ambien and said not to take it every night but when I needed it it is fine.

I too was in the hospital at 29 weeks and was offered 10 mg of Ambien each night (and took). My doctor gave me a script for 10 tablets of 5 mg each and I just took my last one last night. The 10 mg definitely works faster but the 5 mg helps me fall asleep within 1/2 hour anyway. I do not get insomnia that much but did because I was so nervous in the hospital so I am going to try and go without until the end of the pregnancy.
