Am I gaining too quickly?

I'm only 14 weeks pregnant and completely new to this whole twin thing. I've read a few books and seen some literature from the March of Dimes and they all cite research showing that women pregnant with twins should aim to gain 24 lbs by 24 weeks to lower the risk of preterm labor.

So I've been eating quite a bit, trying to front-load my weight gain because when I was pregnant with DD, I developed gestational diabetes at only 8 weeks pg and found it almost impossible to gain weight (I started on the low end of normal for my height) on the low-carb diet they had me eating. I did manage to gain 25 lbs by the end of the 41st week, when I was induced.

I was told I'd probably develop GD this time too (I'm older, and there are two placentas), so I'll admit: I have been ENJOYING my carbs, thinking I was going to have to give them up. :p But I passed the first glucose test, and now my OB's staff are telling me that I need to slow down. I've gained about 8 lbs so far. This doesn't seem excessive to me for 14 weeks, but I've never been pregnant with twins before so I have no idea how quickly the weight piles on in the 2nd and 3rd tri. My OB's staff also said that they recommend a gain of 30-40 lbs for women pregnant with twins, which is lower than the range I've seen in books.

I'd love to read some of your experiences with weight gain, and I'm completely open to any advice you're willing to share. I can definitely slow down the weight gain if I need to by substituting starches and grains with fruits and veggies, but I'll admit: I don't really want to. ;)

In my experience, not all OB's and the people in their practice are twin pregnancy professionals. ;) My RE {reproductive specialist} told me that with a twin pregnancy the weight gain should be 20-25 lbs! Um yeah. My OB told me that my weight gain should be around 40 lbs. By 14 weeks I had gained about 15lbs or so. I'm no expert but 8lbs by 14 weeks doesn't sound like too much {to me} plus when you get into the later part of your second trimester and into the third, you may have a harder time gaining weight since you will be "full" of baby.

  3. I had gained 8 lbs before my 9 week appointment! I basically gained a pound a week from week one. I was at 23 lbs gain at 20 weeks. My dr said that I was gaining alittle too fast too, but my Dr doesn't specialize in twins. I'm not worried. I have heard that in a twin pregnancy you should gain around 55 lbs. I am on track for that, so I am not too worried. 8 lbs does not sound bad at all for twins, I think you're doing great, as long as you are eating healthy food to gain the weight, you should be fine. At 27 weeks I weighed myself & had gained 33 lbs

I was average, maybe a little less than average, weight when I first got pregnant. My OB really wanted me to be gain at least 20 lbs by 20 weeks. I had the hardest time gaining weight at first (I think I had gained about 5 lbs at 14 weeks) then from 14-20 weeks I gain like 15 lbs. Like you, I had so much fun eating whatever I wanted! I still ate pretty healthy, but I definitely ate an extra kolache or breakfast taco when I could! My OB overall wants me to gain about 45-50lbs. I have read some books where the suggested weight gain with twins is 45-56lbs for the avg body. At 31 weeks I have gained about 42 lbs. My weight gain has really slowed the pass couple weeks. Try not to let the doctors stress you out about your weight, especially if you are healthy and were of normal weight to begin with. I think 8 lbs at 14 weeks sounds great. Now you just have to gain 12 lbs in 6 weeks! Good luck!

I don't think it is about gaining weight but eating healthy - Don't shoot for a specific number or you will find yourself eating fatty foods just to gain weight and that isn't good for the baby.

Eat sensible meals and light exercise. As long as the babies are growing, you are fine.

I have steadily gained about 1lb a week since the beginning. This past two weeks I have gained a little more. 22weeks and I have put on 26lbs total. I am of normal to thin build for my height of 5'7''. My doc is not concerned at all about my weight in fact she has said nothing about it, in the beginning she said I will probably gain between 45-50 lbs. I just eat healthy and am not concerned about it.

I have gained 15 pounds already, 10 of which was in my first 10 weeks because I could only keep down carbs..so I ate alot of them considering I was always hungry=)

Everywhere I've read and everyone I've talked to says with a twin pregnancy dont worry to much about weight...It takes alot to grow those babies. so I'm trying to keep with that mind set, granted I gained 80+ with my son so I am eating alot better and will cut way back if I see myself going in that direction again but for now I've gaind about a pound a week and I'm happy with that.

I think the number woudl be different for all of us and base on your pre pregnancy weight.
I am 14 weeks and gained only 3 lbs but I was told try not to gain anything until 12 weeks and after that gain 1lb per week. But I am very overweighted.

As of my appointment today, I am up about 25 pounds. My doctor said I'm doing beautifully and my weight is good. As with PP, it depends on the doc and what weight you were. My doctor told me to shoot for 35-40 pound weight gain based on my PP health. I'm also gaining all belly, my face, arms and legs are all the same. He told me when you get into 2nd & 3rd tri, it's hard to not gain weight because the babies are growing and you will just be more hungry at times. Basically now, I just eat healthy until I'm satisfied. I also used to exercise alot and have had to increase intensity so my body was already burning less calories.

I only gained about 20 or 25 lbs up until the last couple of weeks of my twin pregnancy. Then when I started to really retain water, I put on another 20+ lbs!!! in water weight... even my nose swelled up, ug. But I also started out heavy, so it's a different ballgame. Personally, I think you sound like you're right on, especially if you started on the thin side like you said. And remember that a twin pregnancy is most always at least a couple weeks shorter than a single pregnancy, so the amount you'll end up gaining, will be in a slightly shorter period of time. Basically, if you're eating healthy and have a relatively balanced diet (even with the added carbs), and not just gorging on donuts all day long, I think you'll be fine!

At 20 weeks of pregnancy I had already taken 28 lb. I'm 1m75 and weighted at 20 weeks 191.8 lb. So I got a good warning from my Dr. that I should NOT gain more weight.

At this stage I stopped ordering restaurants delivery food with all the unhealthy saturated fat it contains and switched to home made healthy food. Not only my weight gain has reduced but also I feel more energetic.
