Am I doing this right?

So, the boys started climbing out of their cribs last week they are 27 months. We decided to transition them to day beds using their existing convertible cribs. They are doing really well as far as staying in them for naps and at bedtime, but Tyler is waking really early and coming into our room. I dont speak to him and I take him back and put him in his bed and sit on the floor next to the door (not giving him any attention) until he goes back to sleep or it is time to get up-whichever comes first. Does anyone have any other tactics that might work?

    Thanks.

We just spoke to ours and told them they are not allowed to come out until we get them. And of course, there is a gate at the door too.

Rachel, sounds like you are doing things just fine. We actually have those safety first door knobs on the inside of Emilie and Trevor's doors so they can't get out of their rooms. It has worked well. Would something like that work for you?

This may be stupid, but can I ask your reasoning for not wanting them out of their room. Maybe I am missing something, but I *think* I would rather them come into our room so that I know they are awake instead of just walking around their room??

On the other hand maybe they would get back in their beds if they knew they couldnt escape???

They refused to nap again today. If they were in separate rooms I think that would be a different story altogether, because they feed off each other. I think they want to give up their nap but I am so not ready for that. I could go to crib tents if I have too. But they really are getting the hang of their big boy beds.

I tell mine that they can't get up until the sun gets up. It worked for us and they usually don't get up until about 7:30 or 8:00 now. I have thought about getting an alarm and setting it and telling them when it goes off they could come out of their room, but we never had any issues after I told them that, they seemed satisfied with that response.

Maybe the latter is one of the nice side effects of them NOT leaving their room. The other reason is I don't want my kids walking out the front door when I am still asleep. And in my house, Kevin is totally capable of that, even with a lock.

I am glad they are getting the hang of it. I am sure the napping will be shorter but they will probably still nap most days.

Maybe you could try getting a toddler clock/putting a light on a timer and telling him he's not allowed to get up until it comes on. There were some different clocks discussed in this thread recently.

 for the tough times. I am  all wrong, but I don't mind when mine come in to snuggle and lay with me at 6:00, and especially if they fall back to sleep for an hour or so. I am like you, I don't care if they are out of their rooms. The benefit I have is first, our rooms are upstairs and they would never come downstairs alone. Second, my big kids will get up with them and play if I don't want to get up yet.

But, I still think they are transitioning and will figure it out eventually. Sounds to me like you are doing a great job!!
