My guys are VERY scared of bugs... They wouldn't stay out of the fridge they kept opening it up and it was starting to defrost all the food... so I drew a bug on the door handle... now they won't go near the fridge! So since that worked so well, they kept trying to get out the front door, (I open the big door, so the storm door is open all day, and we can look out...) well they going out the door, even with the little handle locked, so I drew a bug near the handle and now they won't go near it either! Is that cruel or a new interesting way to keep them out of things? My mom told me it was mean! But hey, if it works it works.

You have me cracking up here! But you might create a new problem... what if this causes them to get over their bug phobia and they start bringing bugs into the house!!
I love it! I only think it's cruel if you are really trying to scare them (as a joke). I'd think your method is more like putting a Mr. Yuck sticker on the things they shouldn't touch. I wish it would work with my guys but only one is scared of bugs and he's pretty swift when it comes to telling fake from real.
I don't think it's mean, you aren't doing to watch them freak out, it's just a distraction tool. Wish something like that would work at our house, but my kids are all fascinated with bugs, that would just draw their attention there
I remember when I was a kid, those poison control stickers were the big thing... they were green and had a skull and cross bones on them. My mom used them on everything (not just poisionous cleaners and such) that she wanted me to stay away from. I don't think I was scared of the picture, the way your kids are of bugs, but it got the message across. I don't think it's cruel at all. They are not old enough for you to reason with them about the things you do not want them to touch. Instead, it is a visual way to get that message to them. I think it's pretty creative! It may not work forever, but if it works to keep them safe, it's a good thing. -Catherine
QUOTE what if this causes them to get over their bug phobia and they start bringing bugs into the house!! Good possibility... then I will be scared to death!! LOL
You do what works, especially when you have twins! I wish my kids were afraid of bugs. We are actually working on instilling that fear in them for their own protection. See this? This is a scorpion and it can sting you and it will hurt VERY VERY VERY MUCH so NEVER EVER touch one of these!!
I think its funny and creative too...I think it would be mean if you actually put a bug there, and tried to scare them with bugs. I think its great!
Well let me share a personal experience with this. When I was a toddler I used to love to write in books and tear the pages out. My Dad of course was not a happy camper. My mom hung a little rubber spider (like the ones you can get at carnivals and such) on the bookshelf. I apparently was terrified of the bug and of course stopped destroying the books. To this day I am afraid of most bugs.

I work in a place where we live fairly closely with bugs, and I work in a field with fairly high turn over, of our 15 faculty members, about 5 are new each year. I've seen a lot of people really really freak about bugs. Don't blame your mom, it's human nature.
What a great idea! Not cruel at all and kudos to you for being so clever. I was cracking up! :rotflmbo:
Trish I am afraid of bugs too!! People make fun of me all the time! If it is a bee or a wasp you can guarantee to see me running in a different direction!!
I think it's funny!!!! I would totally do something like that. We have to lock doors that they want to go out of and they aren't strong enough to open the fridge - thank goodness!!! I think it's clever and creative! YOU GO GIRL!
I think my response to this is based on their response to it. If all they do is see it and remember not to touch then that is fine and a good reminder tool. If they are freaking out when they get anywhere near it, that might be cruel.
haha, i can imagine walking into your house and seeing little bugs drawn everywhere, thats a good idea, my girls are so intreeged by bugs at the moment, they have no sence of fear yet.
Wow what a good idea. That would have been helpful when they were younger. Heck No I dont think its cruel very creative!!

I agree with everyone... you're not trying to scare them as a joke, I think it's a great idea. I'm going to try it tomorrow, but I'm not sure it will work. They don't seem to be afraid of bugs and spiders like their mommy is!!! :shok:
