Caleb will be 5 weeks tomorrow, and he always sounds like he has his stuffy nose. It's starting to move to his chest too, he was sounding kind of rattle-y today. The doctor said not to worry about it, that it's a form of reflux, but of course I worry! I don't remember if the girls had this or not. Is this normal?

One of my boys had the same problem, my pedi had me use saline drops and it helped although it didn't totally get rid of it. He has outgrown it now I guess. I would put a drop just outside each nostril and he would inhale naturallly while breathing. I did this several times a day and it helped.

Both of my girls were incredibly stuff for the first three or four months. They had reflux too, and it makes sense that it's related - all that gunk coming back up the throat. I agree with the suggestion for saline drops. If it seems like it really bothers Caleb, you could have him sleep on a wedge. That would keep the stuff from coming back up while he's sleeping.

My girls didn't have reflux, but all of them (within a few weeks of coming home) were stuffy like that. I always kept the saline drops handy. I hope he feels better soon...it's miserable to watch them like that.

Both of my babies were somewhat congested for the first few months too - my doctor also said not too worry and it was "normal" for some babies babies to have stuffiness. 5 weeks their systems are still so young and trying to figure things out. From my understanding it's when they have any type of labored breathing, quick/rapid breaths that you should consult w/an MD. It sounds like you've already spoken w/your doctor so (easier said then done) I wouldn't worry.

Kelly, does it sound like a snorting sound?

At 4 1/2 months, we took Nicholas to an ENT because he had this very very loud snorting sound he would make (had it for a long time before we took him in). We found out he had larynxgomalaysia. It is simply a condition where his larynx is soft/immature. The Dr. said he would out grow it by a year but he actually ended up out growing it around 6 months.

My nephew is about 6 weeks and he recently got diagnosed with the same thing.

Yes, it's like snorting. It's sounds like there's stuff up there, but I've tried sucking it out with the bulb, and don't get anything. Maybe it is the larynx thing.
