My dd has started to have BO at just 6 years old. I don't see any other signs of puberty. Is this the first one?

Also, is there kids deodorant or can she just use woman's deodorant?

I don't think there is a kids deodorant, but I know there's a Teen kind. Here's a link: [post="http://www.medshopexpress.com/029609.html"]Teen Spirit[/post]. I'm pretty sure the B.O. and hair under the arms are one of the first signs as well as breast budding.

It's possible that it's not prepubescence, but glandular. I would take her in to be seen by her pediatrician and checked out just to eliminate the possibility of any glandular issues, as they can cause body odor issues.

Is there any reason to suspect early puberty? Did you hit puberty early yourself? Is she overweight? Overweight kids typically hit puberty earlier than their slimmer counterparts.

My 'friend' came at 12 and my babe is a skinny little thing. She is gone camping with Sparks right now but I plan on checking her out for hair or breast buds when she comes back.

Since her birthday is near, does she have a check-up coming up? If so, definitely mention it to her doctor. Body odor can be caused by adrenal gland or thyroid gland issues, and they're often not at all problematic, but they are good to be aware of. I believe that there are tests that they can do to check for this (and to rule out precocious puberty, as well). Good luck!

Kayla has bo and I mentioned it at our well visit last fall. The ped asked about any other signs, hair being the big one, and since she doesn't have any the recommendation was to just use a deodorant soap.

She has a doctors appointment soon so we will mention it then. I checked her out and I don't see any other signs so we just went out and bought her own deodorant. She thought it was great...it took her a half hour to decide on one. She must have smelled them all!! Now I just hope she uses it everyday without being nagged.

    Thanks for sharing your experiences!

This isn't the same issue, but an issue nonetheless. My boys have stinky feet, so in the summer I will spray their feet with aerosol antiperperant/deodorant if they are wearing sandals. They also had issues with bad breath - the kind you could smell just by being in the same room. I was so worried this would be a lifelong issue for them, but fortunately, after their tonsils/adenoids were removed, this problem went away. It is so hard being a parent. No one wants their kid(s) to have an embarrassing issue that might cause them to be picked on. I agree with the deodorant and talking to the pedi about it.

In case anyone else is having the same problem the doc said that it was normal and it was even normal to find one long hair growing under her arms as long as no other showed up there or anywhere else.

Hi! I am new and I can't believe I found this post right off. I have newly-turned 7 year olds who have serious b-o. I do not want to embarrass them. They do wear deo...but don't always remember. I worry about the deo causing some sort of long term prob...I don't know what. The thing is, they are late bloomers with everything else....teeth (one lost two in the last few months, one just lost her first last week) but their armpits....stink. We noticed it first last year...smells like bad onions (sorry tmi) They do not want me to ask their pedi...so that is a problem. They are extremely shy. No health problems are known...they seem great. They just have bo...and also their hair never seems to smell very good. I used to teach school and I dont ever remember any of my kids smelling?!

I bought some of that Teen Spirit deodorant for my girls. It was really mostly Caitlin that needed it, but didn't want Sarah to feel left out! I think Caitlin has more of a problem with b.o. than my son who is nearing 13! She did just recently find one hair in her armpit too, so I guess she is my early maturing one. What fun.

My oldest DS started with BO at the age of 4.... It was only occassionally and we had him tested for all kinds of things. He turnd out to just be a stinky boy. We were told we could use deoderant soap. But that tended to dry out his skin. So then we were told we could use deodorant, but not antiperspirant. Apparently the antiperspirant contains heavy metals that aren't good for children. So my DS has been using deodorant since he was 4-5 yo.
